One of my fathers jobs was as an auditor for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for 38 years, and the one thing he told me never ever ever to do w was to steal public funds. Of course, he never wanted to steal anything, but he said there is nothing so stupid and dangerous as to steal public money. The reason for this he would say, is that they will go after you with hammer and tongs, and will not stop until you are able to be found guilty and put away.
The story is actually even more complex than the article lets on, and there could be some big trouble for other people ahead, but until that happens, as far as Im concerned, mums the word .

(23,572 posts)That is the case with vitas for profit hospice:
https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/chemed-corp-and-vitas-hospice-services-agree-pay-75-million-resolve-false-claims-act
They are still doing what they were fined for.
That's one reason why so many small non profit hospices go under. vitas provides round the clock care at nursing homes at end of life. it's wonderful for the patients and families. But, it's medical fraud unless there are symptoms that are very hard to control you cannot bill medicare like that and they do. BTW vitas is owned by rota rooter.

(5,455 posts)good doctor & very nice to work with but, one day they marched him out of the hospital in handcuffs.
He had set up a hospice business & routinely directed his hospital patients to his hospice facility- He and his business partner raked in the dough.
He was always traveling back and forth to his home in Fla., always tanned and looking buffed. Something seemed to be off
He was sentenced to 6 years.
