General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsLast night Maddow Reminded everyone about this. It was not breaking news.
I have been posting about this for a long time. AG Barr/Trump sabotaged the DOJ. They sabotaged the NY investigations, the Mueller investigation and made it impossible for some of them to be re-opened. Many prosecutors resigned during this time in protest.
Bragg has now re-opened the case into Individual 1. A grand jury is in place. One of the prosecutors who resigned when Bragg shut the investigation down will be on 60 minutes this Sunday and Maddows show on Monday. Bragg may have reopened the case because there may be new evidence, just a guess. Recently the Trump Org was found guilty on 17 counts which may be a factor in Braggs decision.
Some people have been for a long time blaming Garland for this and that. When Garland took over the damage to the investigations were done. The damage to the DOJ was severe and Garland had to clean up the mess.

(21,371 posts)from indicting "individual one?" I will say this, Garland only had 6 months to indict before the statute of limitations expired.
Granted, Bill Barr chose to defend Trump (the office) in the E. Jean Carroll defamation lawsuit because Barr believed that slandering someone was an official duty of the president. Enter Merrick Garland he did not have to defend the office but he chose to do so. Garland also considered slandering someone to be an official duty of the president. Carroll's attorney appealed and a district judge ruled against Garland. The district judge ruled that slandering someone was not an official duty of the president. Trump's lawyers appealed and that decision has yet to be made, it should be forthcoming. Trump has an argument to use that slandering someone is an official duty, that argument is Garland. If the appeals court rules in favor of Trump Carroll's defamation suit is dead in the water that is why she filed a 2nd lawsuit.
Merrick Garland has a record to be judged on, yes Barr obstructed justice but blaming Barr for what Garland did, didn't do is not accurate.

(12,299 posts)the red flags were everywhere and yet the corporate media ignored them. Propaganda galore just like what is happening now. Lies, lies, and constant false and fake conspiracies. And to top it off, RWers - woke, crt, m&ms, xbox, stoves, election lies and stealing, and gawd knows what else. RWers invent total bullshit and hate, fake, corporate media and social media march in as gospel.

Bragg is covering his ass.
He returned all the exhibits and paperwork when he shut down Pomerantz and Dunne, who said their case was very strong.
Bragg's investigation is a dog and pony show that will go nowhere.

(15,239 posts)...and that improved willingness in the DoJ to go after the powerful is what needs to be proven, not what should be assumed until proven otherwise.
I'm sure that the DoJ under Garland is much better than under Barr. What I don't automatically grant, however, especially given the poor record of powerful and connected people being held to account in this country, is that the DoJ is better enough.

(32,662 posts)Bill Barr was the Attorney General for the the United States government, and headed the Dept. of Justice. SDNY (Southern District of New York) is one of the departments under the US Attorney General's purview and it's situated in Manhattan, NYC.
Alvin Bragg is the AG for Manhattan County (state of New York) and it's also in Manhattan, however it's altogether separate. AG Bragg prosecutes for the County of Manhattan only, and oversees the investigation of crimes in Manhattan. Bill Barr never had a say in how the Manhattan DA (either Mr. Bragg or his predecessor Mr. Vance) did his job. The Mueller Report has no impact on the Manhattan DA's office one way or the other.
Same thing could be said for Merrick Garland - the SDNY reports to him, but the Manhattan County DA never did, and never will.
