Not just an environmental sin. I know of several people who lost horses and other domesticated animals to choking on balloons, or has body parts injured by being strangled by the ribbons that are tied to them. Or, the countless wildlife that are killed or maimed because of them...

6. When I was young

We would get dry cleaner bags and make a cross with balsa wood in the opening. Put candles on and light them.
Hold burning paper under the bag to fill it with hot air. We did this at night. It would be a glowing orb in the sky. We did this in southeast Pa when it was wet outside. There may have been some leafy vegetation involved.

We also had a space ship made out of two sawyer sleds. With lights and three legs. We would put that out by the road and watch the people.
