*An in-store display of Snoop Doggs Cali Red Wine was removed from a Kroger supermarket in Peachtree City, Ga. after several customers allegedly complained that it was inappropriate.
According to WSB-TV Channel 2, shoppers said it was stereotypical to sell Snoop's Cali Red wine during Black History Month.
"I just felt that it was offensive," customer Johnnie Jones, a former president of the local NAACP, told WSB-TV Channel 2.
"They really promoting alcohol. Proud of drinking wine? No. We're proud of the Tuskegee Airmen whose shoulders I stand on. We need to be thirsty for knowledge," Jones told the station.

Seriously? At first glance I thought it was some Karen who complained. I've seen this wine before. Never felt the urge to try it but it's been available for a while.

(11,767 posts)A charitable reading of the complaint is that the customers were offended by the idea of the store using Black History Month to promote alcohol sales.
Like, "Hey, in honor of Black History Month, have some wine... Snoop Dogg made it". I can see how that might be offensive.
Sort of like, "Hey, Let's honor two of the best American Presidents Washington and Lincoln by having a mattress sale".
Or... "Hey, let's honor Mexican-American heritage on May 5th, in honor of a battle between Mexican and French forces (that did not determine the outcome of the war) by promoting drinking Mexican beer." "Drinko de Mayo" has gotten on my nerves more than once, though I typically don't demand that displays come down.

Sure, it's an eye-roller, but nothing I would complain to any business or anybody about.
I don't get it, though. Why can't a Black entrepreneur create his own signature label?

(105,622 posts)Its very negative, customer Michael Drummond said.
The display is a life-size cutout of Snoop Dog with his brand 19 Crimes on it. Bottles of the rappers wine and Black Girl Magic wine are in front of the cut-out.
They really promoting alcohol, Drummond said.
A blackboard next to it has, Celebrating Black History Month written on it, with a clenched fist that has Dream Like Martin and other phrases on it. The board also reads, Say it loud, Im Black and Im proud.

The blackboard also says "Black owned products" on it.
So it's not about the product, it's about that one store that thought this was a good promotional tie-in.
Caliman73
(11,767 posts)They are trying to sell products by tying into cultural pride.
You can argue that Snoop has made a success out of his talent for rap and production. He has diversified into other business endeavors, but it seems a pretty tone deaf move to sell some wine by the grocery store.

(16,180 posts)the wine is actually pretty good for its price range. I like it. If you knew about the brand though, 19 crimes you would know it only names wine after people who have been convicted of certain crimes. Martha Stewart also has one named after her.
Snoop Dogg has partnered with the wine maker, so he makes $$$ of every bottle sold.

My gut doesnt get along with red wines, so I dont buy it, but damn people, stay out of the damn wine and spirits department if your delicate sensibilities cant handle it.

(11,767 posts)He is hawking. It is his wine. You can say he is shilling Corona because he likely has no personal stake in the manufacturer other than what they are paying him, but Cali Red is Snoop's wine.

It seems his objection was tying Black History Month to alcohol sales.
