Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI am disgusted to my fucking core about the state of this country.
It just...I mean...this shit has no end in site and...its just...like...these motherfuckers....they...i don't.....FUUUUUUUCK! Right?
Whether we it's the constant assault on the gay/transgendered community. The soon to be fascist in chief telling Disney what they can produce as content (I realize that he hasn't even announced yet, but we as a country gave W a second term. Democrats aren't really supporting the most progressive President we've had since probably FDR because "he's old". I have very little faith in our electorate. I'm in the mindset that Desantis is a given, god forgive me and I hope I'm wrong.) The blonde dingbat Du Jour (because someone will come along to take her place, regardless and spew the same ignorant, mindless bullshit once she's gone. Hence, the Du Jour moniker) actually talking about splitting the country and getting hours airtime to make the argument. The AR-15 as the "National Gun" of the republic, regardless of how many Americans have lost their life to that particular piece of weaponry and the ease of obtaining it. Books being banned in our children's schools. Books being fucking burned for that matter. African American studies being shut down so that we can revisit the horrors we've already visited on a portion of our society because a percentage of our country doesn't want to learn from our past. Or learn anything really if we're being honest.
And the list goes on and fucking on and fucking on and fucking on. The worst part is, it's all bullshit. And it's all a culture war distraction to obtain political power. Case in point. Okay....not happy to admit it, but I'm fucking old. As will be the following references so I hope you can follow along. I grew up with Bugs Bunny, Jerry (from Tom and Jerry), Milton Berle, Tim Conway, fucking Rudy Giulliani, etc etc etc on my TV in drag. Somehow, I was not groomed into being a homosexual. Somehow with all that grooming, I still grew up to appreciate and lust after the female form. Somehow, my genetic makeup defined my sexual preferences. I know that sounds crazy in todays conservative world of "if you read a gay book you're going to lust after the dick" worldview. Somehow, that didn't happen for me. I don't think I'm an exception to the rule. And for that matter, who gives two shits if I am gay? It has nothing to do with putting food on your family's table, whether or not your children get a good education whether or not you have decent helathcare, or whether or not you are decent human fucking being. Fucking etc, etc, et-fucking-cetera. Unfortunately we have a good percentage of our population that isn't capable of making or even understanding that intellectual point. We are absolutely in the hands of the dumbest motherfuckers our society has to offer up. And there is a plethora of these idiots. And due to that fact, I weep for my country, my home. We are sliding down the hill of intolerance and ignorance. And I don't know how to slow it down.
Don't get me wrong, I still really, honestly do have hope. There is a new generation that kinda sides with my old, narrow , white ass. Seems as if the majority of them reject all of the plethora of bullshit I've laid out above. That absolutely gives me hope. Just hope that their is time left to save my home.
P.S. For the record, straight white male here. WHile life ain't exactly been easy, probably easier not having to deal with the hurdles that my brown, black, gay, or female brothers and sisters have had to deal with. If I can see this, it's fucking mission critical, man.
And I'm revolted about the ridiculous, puritanical, fear of "anything that doesn't conform to my isolated world view" mentality. It literally keeps me up at night. While I remain hopeful, I still don;t have much hope if that makes sense.
Thanks for letting me vent DU. May not be around much no mo', this has been cathartic. Still love my DU peeps, regardless if I'm an infrequent visitor.

Anyway, let me be clear. I agree with everything you said though I may be a bit more optimistic about 2024 and Biden getting re-elected. I am a "pessoptimist" by nature -- expect the worst, but have great belief in hope, as well as hope itself, for better or the best. It works for me. But up from 58 to 71 per cent? Thats good!
I just wish there could be MORE PROMOTION of all his accomplishments. My dad, who was a successful salesman, had a favorite saying:
Late to bed
Early to rise
Work like hell
And ADVERTISE!
He had that plaqued and hung it on the wall in his office. Sure made sense to me!
And my mom had her own version:
If you dont toot your own horn, nobodys gonna toot it for you!
And that, too, made a lot of sense!
Its simple, and I hope Biden and his people AND the Dems in general from coast to coast get this: It wont matter how much good youve done if nobody knows about it, or if nobodys heard about it!

(21,801 posts)show up in groups in many places to show our disapproval of not only the performance crap from RWNJs, but of practices that are hurting us because of lies and gaslighting on important issues from both the MAGAs and the establishment RWers. It is long past time for public pushback about issues that concern us.
We need to show up at hospitals that price gouge patients or give substandard care when they quibble with insurance coverage for people who come to them in emergencies.
Show up at health insurance companies that scheme to deny coverage.
Show up at RR company headquarters that are responsible for environmental disasters. Ditto for oil companies.
Show up at company headquarters that get tax cuts and incentives and then use the money for share buy backs instead of investing it in research for quality and safety or the jobs creation that they claim they need tax cuts for.
Show up outside SCOTUS when they give insane rulings that take away women's body autonomy, cut away at the Civil Rights Act, and when justices refuse to recuse themselves over conflicts of interest.
Show up outside the Capitol when RWers refuse to act on gun control, try to restrict voting rights, try to restrict women's reproductive health options, show blatant favoritism to media and jeopardize security like giving access to the J6 film footage, etc. Show up also at the offices of individual members who promote this insanity.
Show up at local school boards to oppose RW loudmouths and disinformation spreaders on curriculum and the rights of students.
When we complain about those things here, we share information and views, which is good, but by itself does not accomplish the changes we want to see. Our dissatisfaction expressed here needs the follow up action of taking public stands and getting more people to join us on doing that. Ignore the performance stunts by politicians. Don't give them the attention that they want in order to distract us from the issues. Focus on the issues and on building support for them in the general public.

Venting has been found to be unproductive. It doesn't make a person feel better and it doesn't make anyone else feel better, either. In psychology, I believe it can lead to ruminating. We have some psychology people here; maybe they can add some info.
Democracy is participatory. Participate however one can. A person doesn't need to be a genius or even of high IQ to do so.
I always think of those overworked nurses at the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Some were working doubleshifts, they were seeing patients dying, and their life situation was very grim.
However, various good citizens pitched in and did every day tasks for them like grocery shop, clean off their sidewalk after a snow storm, take clothes to the cleaners, etc.
It doesn't have to be much, but everyone should do what they can.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)some time in the, what? 1970s 1980s? Didn't last so long, a self-correcting societal aberration.
Turned out that screaming one's grudges and resentments into the faces of others not only was not healthily cathartic but actually increased the anger. And of course believing that one was supposed to be entitled to do this lead to a lot of fully predictable, albeit unfortunate, sequelae.
Unfortunately, anonymity keeps this era's Internet acting out from being so self correcting.
That's such an important point that democracy is participatory. It requires both government and the involvement of responsible citizenry to keep it on track. And moaning and complaining are no more responsible or helpful to democracy than it is to those fighting on the front lines of disasters for us all.

Mind-fucking of all types is dangerous. WHAT and WHO have caused so many people to view our nation as if far right attitudes are normal and in control? Imo, denial of all the majority of Americans who stand against what some are doing is just that, no matter how much passionate deploring it's wrapped in.
The cure for this mind-fucking is to identify those spreading disaffection to drain people of their will to resist and drop them like the poison they are.

(15,571 posts)They can't be bothered to give the least amount of attention to getting a ballot and voting. So I do believe that there is plenty of blame to go around. I had a discussion today with a woman who was upper middle class who wanted to talk about the student loan issue. She knew nothing about the program except for what she hears from the major media. Since I do know quite a bit about the program having administered it at a public university, and she seemed very open to listening to me, I taught her a few basics about it. Still, she kept saying, "but why are we hearing that all these student loans are going to be forgiven." I tried to correct her that not everyone is going to be eligible for the program and told her just the basics such as how the program is not "new", that it was started when Bush was in office in 2007. The look on her face was incredulous. She thought that this program had been designed by Biden himself.
At the end of our conversation when I told her that the media doesn't delve into all the specifics and that all she had to do was go on the government website and do a bit of reading her response was, "I'm not going to do that. I shouldn't have to do that and neither should the students. It's up to the media outlets to give us all the information."
So, how do you not get disgusted with Americans when they can't be bothered with doing a bit of research instead of thinking it's the media who is supposed to inform them of all the details? As an aside, this woman I know for a fact is college educated and about 70 and upper middle class. The level of ignorance in this country can be gut wrenching.

(1,646 posts)The uninformed and the misinformed do make my head want to explode. They are proponents of both-sideism and conspiracy theories to make up for their knowledge vacuum. I'm equally vexed by the "swing white suburban woman voter" who supports gun control, the right to choose, taxing the rich, parental leave, Medicaid expansion, LGBTQ rights, global warming remediation, etc., and still votes for a Republican every now and then who supports none of that. The Fulton County grand jury forewoman who spewed quite eloquently in recent interviews didn't even vote in 2020. Blows my mind.
But I think if I was to choose my battles I would say the biggest threat to the nation was the hostile white nationalist Fox News watcher.
The "swing white suburban woman voter" may be conflicted, but she won't be shouting down survivors of a school shooting just for exercising their right to assembly nor will she be seen on video smashing in windows at the Capitol. I guess it's a matter of degrees. If the presidential popular vote tells us anything it's that we're more of a center left country.

Jonas Salk, as heroic as he was for not patenting a vaccine and making millions off it wasn't talking about splitting up the states based on political affiliation.
I was taught that Edison invented the light bulb but there is plenty of evidence that may not be true. What does that have to do with red state legislatures passing bills that say children can't get gender affirming care? I'm puzzled by what it is that you are trying to make a point about.
Only thing I can figure is maybe we will continue to progress? What I'm worried about I shouldn't be worried about or disgusted by because humanity will progress? Is that the gist? What is the definition of .."progress"?
In the last 100 years......Social Security, Food Stamps, free colleges, free vaccines, some free medical care for poor, free education ...K-12.
Someone can talk about splitting up the states...Red states can pass bills, but the courts may find them "illegal."
If you think that talking about splitting up the states is illegal, well it is not illegal. And it isn't going to happen.
That is the point.
Segregation was legal, but the Supreme Court determined that it wasn't legal. Get the picture?

The book banning and worrying about everything is classic right-wing to me. My nutty right-wing mother thought that if she ever discussed sexuality and birth control, booze and cigarettes, or anything like that, we children would run right out and have sex with the first person we saw, end up pregnant in the gutter surrounded by empty whiskey bottles and cigarette butts. For the rest of her life, she weep bitter tears of regret for sending her children to public school -- the worst mistake of her life, she said. Except now the nuts have power they never had before.
Students at the Christian college I attended in the early '80s panicked about Halloween (encouraging Satan), the movie "The Life of Brian," some political science classes required a subscription to The New York Times but changed to the Christian Science Monitor just to distract them because it had "Christian" in the title. It's always something.
Biden will be reelected. The country will go limping along. Then after eight years of competence, those few swing voters will decide, "Oh, lets give the other side a chance" and put Republicans in charge and whole thing repeats. Until more non-nutty/completely uninformed Americans vote.

I want to know why our SC got hijacked by the most vile judges who have taken our equity rights, our voting rights, our reproductive rights n wiped them out with 17th century logic. I want to know how the second amendment ended up as the poster for AK military type weapons that are killing innocents n yet even little childrens lives taken dont move enough lawmakers to care about it b/c it doesnt pay as well as the gun lobby. I hear you, my Friend. I dont sleep sometimes wondering just what the hell is gonna happen to my country. The bull💩 golden years are anything but. The country I grew up in is unrecognizable. Except for a few selfless people, Im losing my faith in humanity. I hear you. For the record, Im a white female who just had her 76th birthday last week. I never thought Id live to see my country in such shape but Id give it my last breath if it came to it. I have missed your posts n your music. I hope you dont stay away so much anymore.

(11,530 posts)When is enough? Enough??? The Bush Cheney years escalated the power lying and getting away with it!
Just look at the waste in trials that never produced anything.
I believe now is the best time and shot our country has to
make sure something gets done!!!
Or it will just be another buried Mueller report!
We all have a right to be fed up! These dirtbags have gotten away with this since the days of Glenn Beck, Karl Rove,
Limbaugh, Bill Orilly and just replaced them with more lying dirtbags!
You nailed this Glamrock!!!

(6,621 posts)If we believe our country is worth saving, then it's "all hands on deck." Not just for this month, or this year, FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES!!!
Turn that disgust into motivation & turn that motivation into productive action.
If we don't rise to the occasion & do everything we can to stop all the crap you pointed out, that's on us.

(15,571 posts)I have been told by most people that know me that I'm the eternal optimist. A sister once accused me of seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. I have reflected quite a bit on why I've become so disillusioned at the state of our country and why I have moments where I want to just give up and live the rest of my life in my own little bubble. I don't really have any answers. It's not just that I'm old now - not all old people are like this. I think it's because I did always truly believe that most of my fellow Americans were decent human beings who appreciated living in a democratic country and the ideals the prior generation taught us growing up.
I still maintain that the decline began in the 80's with Reagan and the people behind him who got him elected. They were hell bent on destroying the middle class with their "bust the unions and greed is good" mantra. The problem is that many people who were hurt by those policies are unable or don't want to admit that they were wrong to lionize that guy.

(36,574 posts)who are pissed off that their place at the top of the hierarchy is being challenged by people they think are beneath them. They think they earned their place at the top & don't acknowledge that they stole foreign lands, wrote the rules that put them at the top & have rigged the system to keep them there. A ton of women have bought into the BS, too, largely thanks to religion. Man created God in his image to control woman.
The fall of the patriarchy is my favorite season. May it commence soon.
