For much of the eastern United States, from Massachusetts all the way down to parts of West Virginia and into Ohio, winter has been a bust. While parts of the Midwest have been hit with repeated snow storms, much of California including Los Angeles got blanketed of late and even parts of the Southwest saw near-blizzard conditions, many East Coast cities have missed out.
Boston, known for nasty noreasters and a blizzard last year that dumped nearly two feet of snow on the city, had seen just over 11 inches as of last week compared to an average of 38.6, according to data from the National Weather Service. Philadelphia has gotten only 0.3 inches compared to an average of 19.2. New York, which typically gets over two feet by now, has seen only 2.2 inches. Similar shortfalls have been seen in Providence, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C. and parts of West Virginia.
There have been exceptions like Buffalo, which in November got walloped thanks to lake-effect storm, caused by cold air picking up moisture from warmer lakes. Yet, says David Robinson, a Rutgers University geography professor and the New Jersey state climatologist: For the most part, its been a winterless winter.
A big reason for the lack of snow has been the warmer conditions, Robinson says conditions driven in part by human-induced climate change. The northeast is among the fastest warming regions in the country.
The region has seen plenty of precipitation, but often it has been too warm to snow. Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Vermont all had their warmest January on record, while Indiana, New York and Pennsylvania their second warmest, according to the the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

(17,304 posts)a couple stretches of really cold snaps at xmas, then one in Feb, but otherwise just rain and wintry mix type precipitation. Not complaining.

(75,888 posts)Cold snap at same time as you. Another, not as cold, in mid-January.
Very little snow this year, but rain a dozen times.

(27,813 posts)By yesterday it was pretty much gone.
Mid Michigan is at less than 20% of our usual snowfall. I'm not complaining. I hate dealing with ice/snow/sleet.

(4,339 posts)If I recall correctly, western Pennsylvania/Pittsburgh usually has over 30 total inches of snow by now, and I don't think it's received half that amount. From a shoveling/driving perspective, most people are happy. But I like gardening, and when we have winters such as this one, we tend to pay a steep price around the last week of June and first half of July by suffering through heavy downpours and flash floods. Since 2016, there have been five summers when rains overwhelm and ruin my basil and blow out my still-green tomatoes, and that never happened before. My vegetable gardens used to thrive and produce abundant amounts, and I was able to sauce/freeze/dry a lot of what I grew. Hardly anymore. Climate change is a thing that hits home for me.

(17,304 posts)It's overcast a lot, too. We've had a couple days hit the high 60s near 70, but those have been followed by cold fronts. This winter hasn't been super warm, just mostly above freezing during the day.

(4,339 posts)I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy our recent cameo warm days, but I would have preferred some decent snowfalls before then.

(6,490 posts)I read in the paper the other day that we had 12.5 inches of snow this season. I'm not sure I agree we had even that much, as I recall maybe two or three snows that were an inch or so in accumulation. I never had to shovel the driveway even once as anything we got melted in a day or so. But, even if the 12.5 amount is correct, we averaged three times that amount when I was a kid. February was the third hottest here ever on record, with the second hottest occurring just a few years ago. Last week on consecutive days we shattered high temperature records that had existed since the 19th century. It's going to be 71 here today, but I see no reason to celebrate.

(22,777 posts)is initially felt less in the city and why people are happy when it doesn't arrive. I live in a rural area and since moving here have come to appreciate the cold and snow because it means we'll have fewer fleas, ticks, etc. in summer after we've had a proper winter. Even tho as I age I become less tolerant of cold temps, I've learned we have to have them for good reasons.

(59,769 posts)They got a little late snowfall recently down there. My younger daughter and her family packed up and drove over to the Austrian Alps for a spontaneous week of skiing, two months later than they usually do. The usual snowfall of December-January never happened this year.

(35,013 posts)Temperatures up to 78° in metro Atlanta. I think the part that disappoints me is that I'm seeing mosquitoes again.

(9,422 posts)We had a big cold snap right before Christmas and some snow, so we had a white Christmas, which was nice.
WE had a wet, sloppy snow in January. And that's it. Normally, we had 2-3 fairly big snow falls and lots of little ones.
But it's been WARM this year. Yesterday it was 70F. The planet is dying.
