I tried to sympathize with the "mourning Romney" pics. And failed.

Gloating is not an appropriate reaction for the party and people who regard themselves as the sane, rational, adults in the political room.

So, when I went to the "White People Mourning Romney" aggregations and looked at the pictures, and saw older women in tears, children seemingly crushed, families embracing each other, I couldn't laugh at their pain. They weren't faking anything. They believed, as they believed four years ago, that something terrible and incomprehensible had happened to their country.

But as I continued to scroll down and saw the tweets from the likes of Victoria Jackson, saw the store closed in protest, the utterly disingenuous threats to leave the country for "Australia," sympathy segued into confusion.

What, exactly, ARE these people feeling? Or more accurately, what are they THINKING? Obama has been in office for four years. Satan has not appeared. We have not been herded into Stalinist camps. "Sharia law" has not been imposed. And yet they went right back to apparent visions of apocalypse under whatever kind of crypto-villain Obama supposedly is this week as though nothing had happened since 2008.

None of them -- not one -- expressed a single genuine critique of an Obama policy, or articulated how Romney or any Republican, would have done something better. How could they, when Romney himself relied on attacking healthcare reform modeled on one he enacted as Governor of Massachusetts, and promised spending increases and tax cuts AND deficit reduction, while refusing to say how that is possible?

None of them defended the insane Republican platform on women's rights. Or the war-mongering toward Iran. Or the bloody 4% in additional taxes the rich may someday have to pay if the Bush cuts are actually allowed to expire as they were intended to do.

Instead it was same, willfully idiotic blather. "Socialism and Marxism," from people who wouldn't know either if it bit them on the liver. Cries about God and freedom and the Constitution in the vaguest possible terms.

NOTHING. They have literally nothing to point to, except their own willful ignorance, painfully transparent racial panic, and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of entitled dismay that simply yelling and jumping up and down did not bring victory.

So I landed at last at anger and, sorry to say, contempt. This election did not happen because of the media. Or Hurricane Sandy. Or even because of America's changing demographics and the Republican Party's determination to alienate every non "wealthy white male" in the country.

It happened because Republicans made a stand on being irrational. On relying on identity politics most politely described as tribalism. On social and ecomonic absolutism flying directly in the face of every known fact.

They chose to believe they were entitled to win based on monolithic opposition and bulletproof resistance to any fact-based discussion, compromise, or generosity of spirit. They would simply stand in the corner and shout insults until they got their way. And they did not.

Good. Cry, Republicans, cry. Get it out of your system. The world is not, in fact, what you wish it to be or what you claim it is. It is instead, what it IS. You cannot shout and threaten and pout your way into control.

We'll still be here when and if you want to work on our problems from the premise that a moderate, Hawaiian-born Harvard graduate who doesn't look exactly like you is not the anti-Christ, that tax cuts don't pay for themselves, wars are not our national sport, the climate is changing, and that women and their wombs are not your personal property.

Buck up, Republicans. The world is still here, just like it was four years ago. Hop on board. It's not as bad as you think. In fact, it's a little bit better than it was just a while ago.

You've hit the nail squarely on the head. Tribalism often trumps reason. Always makes me think of both Orwell and Eric Hofer's True Believer. Neither of them lived to see the way this has rolled out, but I don't think either would be happy to know how prophetic they were.

Like figuring out any real points of discussion was beneath them.

It's the attitude of the boss daring you to insult his hideous tie.

So what they're mad about, we can only surmise, is not that their ideas lost, but that their ideas that ideas *don't matter* lost.

"Okay, you guys got one by us. Big mistake, as you can tell by all our screaming about birth certificates. So here's the deal: We'll going to put up a rich, secretive plutocrat who himself refuses to articulate any consistent or detailed point of view from our camp. The right camp.

On top of that, we're going to introduce some really hideous mistaken ideas from the past. On labor, women's rights, the social safety net. Just totally nutso, cruel stuff we used to get away with all the time. We're not going to explain any of it, but you know, it's US. The bossmen. Shut up and take it, and we'll try to forget that whole thing happened before. You're welcome."

They didn't want to give up the idea that the Tribe conquers all. Now they know their tribe isn't in control, doesn't hold the big club.

Thus, panic. Tears. Prayer to a universe they believe has abandoned them.

My cousin posted this on her facebook. Nearly all of my relatives liked and agreed with her. I think I am the only one who's a liberal. She had been my fave cousin and my best friend. Now she's angry at me. I didn't comment on it, thought best to stay away. She seems to have become right wing batshit crazy as she grew older.

I don't care about political correctness or any of these other "modern" terms. Its about freedom of speech, its about my rights as a citizen of the 'for now' United States of America. I have loved my country but for the first time, I am ashamed of the majority of the voting population. How sad a day it is for me. You either voted for him or you didn't vote and that was a vote for him. PLEASE unfriend me if you don't like what I say. I have listened to people I know spew their liberal views and I said nothing in return nor did I unfriend them. Lets see how tolerant they are. GOD BLESS AMERICA, formerly known as a Christian nation. I am going to do all I can to make it a Christian nation once again..... will you join me? so we didn't grow up together, but we always had fun during family visits. We really haven't really kept in touch over the years, but he "friended" me last year. He's career Navy and as FB friends we chatted about our love mutual of Battle Star Galactica when were were kids, a show that inspired him to become a pilot. His mom is my favorite Aunt, and we've always had good relations between families over time, but we just don't always keep in touch as much as "we should". We both have much older siblings and he was the surprise of his family like I was in mine.

Fast forward to election night.

I'm political on DU, this is my outlet, but I keep my FB page as place for silly LOL cats, music videos and archaeology/astronomy articles. It's clear that I'm a liberal, but I'm not overtly political in my postings. On election night, the only things I posted were congratulations to Tammy Baldwin on her historic victory and a joke about all the newly elected women found a way to "shut that whole thing down".

I'm surprised by his thinned skinned actions. It's sad that he's willing to write off family because I support human rights, etc, but I guess this is the new reality of FOX news battle lines.

You're emotionally invested in the game, and it takes a little while to recover.

I'm going to give it a little time before I beat up on them. I didn't like the 'Sore Loserman' shirts and signs in 2000.

Those were especially difficult since I don't believe Gore lost, but the point is: I don't like when folks rub defeat in my face; I believe the golden rule is applicable in this case.

If there is any tension between us and our political adversaries now; I believe we are only extending the tension by not giving them time to lick their wounds. It is better to laugh at them in here; where they shouldn't be offended by what we say liberal to liberal.

Not appalled that Republicans are being bad sports. Appalled that they indulged themselves, again, in this ridiculous melodrama where, for reasons they cannot rationally explain, Obama is the worst thing that ever happened to America. Or the Earth. Or Chistendom.

Over ... what? Tax breaks for billionaires? Health reform that's 1) A Republican idea and 2) already doing some good?

But yeah, it stays here. I'm not going to be putting on any "Suck it, Romney" t-shirts anytime soon.

But the first time I get an "incredulous" query from a real-life Republican about "how this could have happened / Marxist Marxist aaaah," I'm going to tell them what I think, without sarcasm or profanity.

They need it.

I like the growing demographic theory. Blacks, Latinos, LGBT, women, educated people, people who see through Fox News, people who see through hate-radio, people who are confused by the motivation of candidates washing clean pans, people who are confused by the motivation of candidates who lie about marathon times, people who think that a presidential candidate should actually have a plan (that he isn't afraid to talk about), people who are aware of who was financing the republican campaign. 'Those people' decided to vote for Obama.

Conservatives decided to make a case for people to vote against the president; they should have at least put up candidates that could win their home states.

Granted, I am partly in Financial Services too, but I do mine part of the time. I just tend to look at things on a longer view, where Financial Institutions will create other products instead to compensate. The business is making money, that will never stop.

Smart Democrats consistently try to understand Ignorant / Brainwashed Republicans

I appreciate your thread because I too cannot understand this being a close race.. who on God's earth actually voted for that heinous excuse for a man, Romney

but having grown up in Georgia, home of the bible belt, I gained a new appreciation for the ways Religion brainwashes people.. I'm pretty sure if you overlaid the 'religious filter' on Romney voters, you'll find that more than 90% of his voters are what we would call 'extremely religious'

I learned you can't reason with crazy. Because that brainwashing is truly making those poor people crazy.

If we do anything in this country we should stop all government subsidies to Churches, and start to intervene on a culture tha tallows churches, especially in Rural areas, to brainwash our neighbors to their own personal harm.

I think there is so much more to the story of the crying romney supporters but facts are not something they consider.

reconsidering some part of their world view. I'm not religious, but I think most people who are can be rational.

The only person in my workplace to appear every day for the past several weeks with an Obama button on (and management is expressly Republican) has a Divinity degree and runs a summer surf camp through his church. He is devout, but smart, and he's had it with how hard it's become for so many people to just get by.

I'm hoping this loss will jar some of the heretofore less rational Republicans into reconsidering some of their assumptions, religious and otherwise.

the base of the stupidity and ignorance pointed out here is the FACT that 48% of american voters wasted their vote on a loser like mittshit only because in most cases of their rational, he was white and our President is mixed race, brown as it were. I think our country will remain hopelessly divided when it comes to the sickness of racial hate in america. All this talk of buying farmland and guns, call for open revolution and anarchy. "Christians" calling Obama the anti-christ. This is madness and hatred of the most virulent and ignorant kind and ONLY because of his race. Yeah he won with a coalition of races and cultures, but that rabid dog called the 48% percent is still large enough to cause problems. Good luck america in the next four years.

I have contempt for the self-indulgent melodrama centered around the mythological conservative approach to politics. The anti-Christ talk. The invoking of "Socialism and Marxism" with no idea what either entail (or that Socialism, at least, is a successful part of our society already).

But I won't chuckle at their pain. I won't tweak their noses about it. I am angry, that so many people entertain a mythological view of social and political issues, to the point where they believe things about Obama that are observably false.

The stakes ARE high. High enough that we can't afford to be childish about this. We can be angry, and still hope Republicans learn something here.

Like I said, they get the Joe Biden smile and that's it. I'll laugh in their faces. They can wise up, or shut up. Period.

Angry is a thing that rational, serious people can be. Nose tweaking, not so much.

Gloating is just weak, is all. If we're right (and we are) we don't need to dance on the corpse.

but I haven't the stats to prove who kills more. if abortion is considered kills. add this to the death tally around the world... vs the fact people getting abortion is shrinking..

44. When I see those pictures of children, looking devastated

I'm sad too. But then I wonder: What did their parents tell them was happening? "Bronco Bama will come and take our freedums?" It couldn't possibly have been, "Well, son, we disagree with the way he went about healthcare reform, and feel that tax cuts for the wealthy should continue, as we believe they stimulate economic growth."

Maybe now they'll consider toning down telling the kids the fate of humanity hangs on not electing a Democrat.

I think the 2010 elections encouraged right wingers to think the country had come around their way of thinking. The backlash over union rights and the crazy abortion laws should have been a clue, but apparently for many it was not.

This re-election is another story altogether. Obama's election was not a glitch. Not a heedless reaction to a stupendously bad Republican President. People not only re-hired him, they fought to do so. Stood in line. Filled out forms. Gutted it out.

That's pretty devastating to the narrative that America was overwhelmed with buyer's remorse, either for Obama, or the Democratic Party in general. It doesn't mean everyone supports everything about Obama or the party, but it does mean they looked at what both sides had to offer, and firmly rejected Romney and the Republicans.

If that's shattering, it is sad. But it's a shattering that needed to happen. Now they have to figure out why the majority of the country doesn't share their apocalyptic view of Obama.

Romney possee and held him down and cut his hair.... Romney didn't pay taxes from 1996 to 2009 and maintained he paid at least 13%. Romney lied saying jeep was closing down american plants and moving to China...Romney lied when he said he loved America.

I can't pity a fool whose only love and ambition is money and more money.

They crying, the despair...reactions to fear of change, fear of losing control, fear of those who are different than their white little bubble worlds.

I don't think they'll ever want to work on problems, fear grips them too tightly.

Not the rich Romney donors who lost money or the bloviating talking heads who predicted a Romney landslide. But on a human level, I can't help but feel bad for the activists who supported him, the people in those pictures. While I think their fears about Obama are completely unfounded, I remember what it was like to have a president who I felt was destroying the country and feeling powerless to stop it after 2004, and that all of my efforts to stop it had been for naught. Obviously I disagree with these people who think Obama is destroying the country, but I have no doubt that they believe it as sincerely as I believed Bush was. I was driving past Exit 89 on I-95 in Maryland when my mom called and told me Kerry conceded, and to this day I still get a nauseous feeling whenever I pass that exit. So on a human level, I have to feel sorry for the people who believed in Romney and worked hard for his campaign. I guess maybe I am too soft that way...I discovered in 2002 and 2004 that I can be a very sore loser, but not so much of a sore winner.

The last four legislative years and the election were all about Republicans punishing the coalition who helped elect Obama. The vicious firings of employees of right wing companies on the morning of the crushing defeat of their standard bearer is outright class war.
