(302 posts)And if he were (to be) stripped of all other currently available presidential perks, that would be even better.

(49,001 posts)Secret Service protection is a necessity for the stability of the nation.
Murder or injury of even a disgraced former President would create national upheavals we don't need.
Further, private security is insufficient for two reasons:
1) Threats can be international or be organized in force to overwhelm private security. The Secret Service gets information from the three-letter agencies that is not available to private security.
2) An ex-President can be competent at winning votes but incompetent at organizing proper, effective security.

If you have borrowed $5 billion, but owe $10 billion, are you a billionaire, or are you the worlds biggest deadbeat? Or both? I guess if no one has the capacity to call in the debt, then youre both.

Trump is not a good businessman.
When Letitia James is done with him (Oct. 2nd trial) he will not be able to do any business in New York, she will cripple him.

(11,301 posts)insurrection, actual crimes against the state. 'Felony' is probably too broad a category. And paying off a stripper (among a couple thousand other shi**y and dishonest things he's done both in and out of office) doesn't rise to the level ... Overall - I'd be a vote against. And I also think there's a certain element of sophomore games and hi-jinks here - which also merits more eye-roll that endorsement.

(21,563 posts)Submitted Feb 2021 by Jayapal and Maloney. It was sent to the oversight committee and no action has been taken since.
Maloney lost to a rethug in 2022.
Called the REAP act.
Being that rethugs now own the committees I would say this bill is dead.

(5,477 posts)Strip away ALL of the benefits that former Presidents get...office and staff allowances, health care, health insurance, and Secret Service protection.
The value of the 'side-bennies' is way higher than the piddly little pension.
