Ever since 2016, the country has watched, on live TV, as this psychopathic sociopath committed crimes on virtually a daily basis.
Can anyone really deny that tens of thousands, (perhaps hundreds of thousands), of people died of COVID 19 because of his malicious indifference? And because of him, only a fool could still believe that: "In America, everyone is equal under the law." (Actually, perhaps we should thank him for tearing the mask off of that particular piece of bullshit.)
Overall, he brought racism and meanness of spirit out into the open and millions followed him. Which means those millions were always there, but he gave them license to publicly shout out their hatreds.
And after the daily craps he took on the country, his closing act was an attempted overthrow of the American government on Jan. 16th, 2021. Every drop of blood that was spilled is on him.
Whether of not he ever pays for his crimes, his legacy is apparent: Marjory Taylor Greene; Gym Jordan; Kevin McCarthy; and countless other right wing fascists that comprise today's Republican Party.
Yet, he's still a daily presence in our society. He's like dog shit on your shoe. His stench lingers. As do the hatreds he unleashed.
Who would have believed that a know-nothing, moronic con man could have brought America to the brink of becoming an authoritarian country? We all should have taken him literally when he said he could shoot someone on 5th Ave. and get away with it.

(161 posts)Is what *should* have happened. Instead people tuned in to a toxic Truman Show instead. The choice was always there. Whats stopping people from stopping him? He has no ability to evade justice, as long as people are willing to give it an actual try

(15,291 posts)Oh, an actual shooting in broad daylight with plenty of witnesses and security camera video might be harder for Trump to get away with than the dozens of other crimes he has committed, but our system gives me no faith whatsoever that Trump would be dealt with with the urgency and speed outright murder would normally warrant.

(4,616 posts)of these dozens of crimes he has committed. Name them and share with us all the evidence you have to prove said crimes that would lock in and guarantee a conviction.
THIS is the problem with a very lot. "we saw it on live TV" yes, we have seen a very lot spewed from DJT on live tv, yes, we did see the storming of the capitol on live tv. What we didn't see was DJT breaking the windows, fighting the police and trashing the place. So, what air-tight evidence do you have that directly links him to that event or any of the people doing the storming? The Willard hotel? Ok, what evidence do you have? A speech on the Ellipse you say, well, there's that pesky 1st amendment thing. So, i'll ask again, what rock solid evidence do you have? Also, how much experience do you have investigating, indicting and convicting those who have committed federal felonies that involved many many people? What is the schedule for completion, and by completion I mean from the crime to conviction?
Disclaimer: I'm definitely no fan of Trump. And I, as much as anyone would die happy if I lived to see him dealt with. That being said, I also understand how the American judicial system works. And it makes me shake my head every time I hear someone carry on on about "it's taking too long, we all know crimes were committed" . Note, we ALL KNEW what happened to Caylee Anthony too, how'd that work out? Just know this, if you are under the delusion that the US justice system is this shinning beacon of swift justice, you will be disappointed EVERY SINGLE TIME. You have a right to Due Process. And that means ALL of it, And that my friend, can, and more often than not does take a very long time. If you have the $$ to pay a team of lawyers, you can hang the other side up for years. If it's instant gratification you're looking for, you're in the wrong place.

(15,291 posts)I have a very hard time believing ALL of this stuff was just too uncertain or too hard to prove, rather than being a matter of prosecution focusing on easier prey without expensive lawyers, and cases where, if prosecution fails, it won't be a big, splashy high-publicity failure. Not to mention the built-in biases of more differential treatment for rich white people.

https://www.citizensforethics.org/reports-investigations/crew-reports/president-trumps-staggering-record-of-uncharged-crimes/#table
As of November 2022, Donald Trump has been credibly accused of committing at least 56 criminal offenses since he launched his campaign for president in 2015. That total only reflects allegations relating to his time in or running for office and omits, for instance, Trumps criminal exposure for fraudulent business dealings.

(24,782 posts)as the results became clear, I shrieked. Wailed. Keened. I intuited in my old crone bones that people would die.
I didn't know how or why. If I'd had to venture a guess at that point I would have said N. Korea.
Anyway...not shocked it came to pass....
You sum it up brilliantly, Cyrano.

(15,070 posts)And it was also obvious that there had to be a finger on the scale. As it turned out, it was Putin's finger which is one of the reasons that the Orange Cancer loved his Russian Overlord.
Of course, there are also those video tapes made in a Russian hotel that are in Putin's possession and represent the leash around Trump's neck that Putin can pull anytime he wants to.
And now, a former KGB spy has claimed that "Trump was a Russian asset." Seems kinda' obvious.

(61 posts)Its good to recall the old precept that given a set of several options, often-times the simplest solution is the answer.
When a career criminal is given the most powerful job in the world, he wont stop committing crimes.
When a serial sexual assaulter brags about sexual assault, hes likely committed several sexual assaults.
When a sociopathic liar is protected by a powerful office, hell never tell the truth.
Hell never be properly punished. Even if he spends twenty years behind bars. Because hes too old to be held to account for his uncountable crimes.
Hes unleashed a racism and hatred in America that hasnt been in the open for generations. Hes unleashed DeSantis and Abbott.
Lincoln is spinning in his grave.

By far, his biggest crime of all! Read once that someone calculated that because of his initial negligence, 140,000 lives were lost and can be attributed directly to him.

Hes wildly unpopular in four of the five populous boroughs here (and has been for decades) and is big only in the one heavily populated by NYPD members.
So while he might get away with it on 5th because brain dead, troglodyte NYPD officers would enable him, if he did it in the middle of Victory Boulevard in Staten Island?
Theyd probably rename the street after him.

Unless we're going back to "DOJ won't ever prosecute him" you can't say he's getting away with his activities.
