(27,472 posts)Generally, they don't hand down sentences; they may make findings that certain facts dictate a particular sentence under the law, but the actual sentencing is in the purview of the judge.

Judges decide sentencing based on penalties established by Statues and established guidelines.

(2,453 posts)They determine guilt or innocence. Sentencing is on the judge, which is bound by statute and guidelines. The only time a jury would be involved in sentencing is typically for death penalty cases, which trump isn't facing.
