When she asked his MOS she KNEW he was full of shit and let him go.

(13,958 posts)This version was cut right after the interviewer said "this interview is over". In the longer version you can see that she follows that with a "just kidding", and continues the interview.
I haven't found a clean Youtube version of a longer clip, but here's one on Rediit:

(50,580 posts)In the Army, your MOS is either a three or five digit alphanumeric code.
For instance, I was a 98C2O.
The 98 is the job group. In my case, Signals Intellgence.
The C is the specific job in that group, Analyst
The 2 is my skill level, which is Sergeant.
The O is my Special Qualification Identifier. I dont have one, so O is the default. Paratroopers are P, linguists are L, drill sergeants are X
there are a bunch.
Marines use a four-digit code, and it can change frequently. When you first join, you are MOS 8000, General Service Marine, until you graduate boot camp and get your real MOS. For some jobs like infantry, you have a training MOS and a post-graduation one. The scene in Full Metal Jacket where Gunny was passing out the MOS is key - most of the new Marines got 0300, Basic Infantry Marine. When they get to infantry school theyre assigned as riflemen, mortarmen, machine gunners or whatever and theres a separate MOS for each
so, if you show up at your unit as a rifleman and the platoon machine gunner came up on his separation date, they might hand you the M240 and tell you that youve got another MOS. Rifleman is 0311, the most common Marine MOS.
The Air Force calls these Air Force Specialty Codes. When I was working with USAF people it was a three digit code; now its five with the fourth being a letter. Space Force does the same thing.
Sailors have Ratings. In the Navy your rating includes your rank, so if you are both an In Flight Missile Repairman and a Petty Officer Second Class - equivalent to an Army sergeant - you will be an IFMR2. When you make Chief you will become an IFMRC. This is how the do it in the Coast Guard too.

(9,478 posts)who has ever been in the military has forgotten their MOS. EVER. Its like someone saying theyre a college professor. You ask, oh what do you teach they say I dont know. I wasnt in the military but could come up with a few MOS and bases.
She should have asked him what a Class Six store is. Another question every single person in the military knows, bar none.

"Well, I've written seven novels. They sold pretty well so far."
"That's really cool. Who is your literary agent? Which publishing house put out your books?"
"......"
"I can't do that, I'm under a court order, you see..."

(70,779 posts)My four years in the Navy were totally Navy, I had zero exposure or concept of what other branches called things. When I first had contact years later with vets from other branches in the VFW, one of the first things some of them asked me was what my "MOS" was. I was blank, which made some of them suspicious about my service. Fairly soon I realized they were talking about my job specialty.
In the Navy the job (MOS) is called: Rating. And the pay grade is: Rate (E-1 through E-9 for Enlisted; O-1 through O-10 for Officers).
"Regular" vets - Enlisted, high school grads, lower pay grades - live in their own experience, like me, had no exposure to the wider specialized knowledge to know about other branches/jargon. I'll go further, since my brother-in-law (older, Army, high school grad), when we compared our DD-214s, saw that there were slight differences in his Army form and my Navy form and made a rude comment that mine was not "real" because it was slightly different from his.
I'm not defending the MAGA dude in the clip, just adding a little angle. And FURTHER, in the Wiki article below, in the third paragraph, I think they used their own words wrong, where they say that "E-1 to E-3 have no rates (sic, should be 'rating' ) ". E-1, E-2, and E-3 are PAY GRADES, so they DO have RATES. What they mean is that they don't have a job specialty (RATING).
********QUOTE*******
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_Navy_ratings
United States Navy ratings are general enlisted occupations used by the U.S. Navy since the 18th century, which denote the specific skills and abilities of the sailor. Each naval rating has its own specialty badge, which is worn on the left sleeve of dress uniforms of enlisted personnel. U.S. naval ratings are the equivalent of military occupational specialty codes (MOS codes) used by the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps, the ratings system used by the United States Coast Guard, and Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSC) used by the United States Air Force and United States Space Force.
Ratings should not be confused with rates, which describe the Navy's enlisted rank and pay-grades. Enlisted service members (sailors) are often referred to by a combination of both their rating and their pay-grade. For example, if a sailor has the pay-grade of E-5 (rank of petty officer second class) and the rating of boatswain's mate, then combining the twoboatswain's mate second class (BM2)defines both rank and rating in formal address or epistolary salutation. Thus, boatswain's mate second class (BM2) would be that sailor's rate.[1]
Sailors from pay-grades E-1 to E-3 have no rates (sic, should be "rating" ) and are considered to be in apprenticeships or training for a rating, thus the slang term "non-rates" when referring to them as a group. They are instead divided into five general occupational fields (airman, constructionman, fireman, hospitalman, or seaman). A Sailor actively working toward a specific rating is referred to as "striking for a rating" and is called a "striker".[1] ....
