"Hey Jude, don't make it bad.
Take a sad song and make it better."
Paul McCartney; Hey, Jude; 1968
Like millions of Americans, I was opposed to CNN holding a "town hall" with the defendent. This was made worse -- if possible -- by CNN finding an audience of republicans "sympathetic" to the former president. Perhaps next CNN will hold a mess hall interview with Ed Kemper, in front of a sympathetic audience. It might help CNN in their effort to be recognized as the new "fair and balanced" media source.
I do not subscribe to CNN, and thus did not watch it. I did have five phone calls while it was on -- the first and last from the same person. Each told me that Kaitlan Collins was doing a fantastic job. Since then, I have seen a few brief clips from the event. And I have read DU, and watched some coverage of it on MSNBC, primarily saying it was horrible. I think that both of these viewpoints are correct, as there are many diverse aspects to consider.
There have been reports that the defendent's campaign was euphoric with the defendent's behavior. Rumor has it many told the defendent that they reached the most powerful climax of their adult lives while watching the town hall. I assume we all know that to stay in the defendent's good graces, one has to tell such lies. Certainly no attorney watching could be pleased, as we will discuss soon.
"And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain,
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders."
McCartney; Hey, Jude
There are good people who found the event, and even discussions of it, to be "triggering." That is valid. Having a person that a jury determined to be a sexual predator insulting his victim, while trying to justify his criminal behavior, should disgust every decent human being. But it takes a greater toll on some individuals.
Because the next 18 months promise to be among the ugliest in American political history, with the defendent being the likely republican nominee, those people can and should put self-care first. For we are confronted with a malignant tumor that not only is supportive for stealing classified documents, lying about the outcome of the 2020 election, sparking January 6, kissing Putin's ass, and advocating white nationalism -- they laugh at jokes about sexual offenses.
No matter if we wish it was different, that is the reality of what we are confronted with. Al Sharpton notes we can either ignore the defendent, which would be perilous, or confront him. I think that wee are in a good position to trounce him, and devastate the republican party in 2024.. Andthis town hall can be used to our advantage, to the defendent's disadvantage, and to crush republicans at all levels
"And don't you know that it's just you, hey Jude, you'll do,
The movement you need is on your shoulder."
McCartney; Hey, Jude
Let's set emotion aside, and focus on logic. It is reported that E. Kean Carroll is seriously considering another case against the defendent, for the terrible things he said about. He did not learn, from the jury's verdict two days previous, that not everyone will wilt like a republican primary opponent under his verbal attacks.
The defendent foolishly said incriminating things about J6 and the stolen classified documents. Jack Smith is fully aware of this.
In a normal primary, a republican will campaign to the right, hoping to move towards the centter in the general election. The exception has been when an incumbent faces no serious, if any, primary challenge. In these circumstances, the candidate begins with a positive message that appeals to the entire party.
The defendent, of course is in no sense the incumbent ...... despite what his supporters say in Jordan Klepper interviews. But while he faces no serious primary challenge, his campaign is a self-pitying, bitter appeal to the maga republicans. The defendent has, in the past, driven a number of republicans to become independents. His current attempts to be a victim will result in others either voting for another candidate in the primary and general elections, or to not vote at all. This is a good thing.
The defendent's grotesque attacks on "nasty" women, and his refusal to answer questions on abortion, will damage him even more. There are enough jackasses like those in the simply patheyic sympathetic audience that he will win the nomination. This allows us to hang the defendent around the necks of all other republican candidates. Very few will risk insulting the maga voters by speaking out against the defendent.
We've got this.

I am prioritizing my mental health by ignoring it as best I can.
Gonna be a long couple of years.
People need to take care of themselves. Our good friend cilla4progress posted about visiting a state park. I've been spending time outside here, enjoying myself.
(Did I tell you that I'm a grandfather?)

(3,823 posts)I had no idea aside from the dozen or so photos of that good looking lad.
Yesterday was our 10th wedding anniversary and we went to the local pool/spa overlooking the lake.
Had dinner out last night. Today we took an ecotour in a kayak to a river about an hour north of us. Very pleasant.
Monday I return to the office where I work with loads of trumpers and scrupulously avoid mentioning politics.
Oh well.
This summer we will spend loads of time at the pool by the lake.
Its been way too many years of stress for all of us. More than we ever thought we would have to deal with in our lives. He needs to be gone.

(75,771 posts)from my end, the little guy has prompted me to get in the best shape I have been in years. And I'll need to continue on that path, as he will be much more mobile in a short time. And he is so much like his father that he'll be hard to keep up with! A week ago D was in a 30-mile race that he only had less than two weeks to prepare for. Crazy.

that my sudden gasping chest pain and dizzy spell were neither heart attack nor stroke, but that I should check in with my own doc after getting home from where we were visiting. Dont you hate when that happens.
The previous couple of days with grandkids and our daughter were very pleasant indeed, though.
Back at our own home, we tried to catch up a bit on the commentary from MSNBC, and in my case, from DU as well, and that was entirely enough. The melting orange blob makes me want to throw things. I wonder if it is my blood pressure that is warning me off.
I think there is cause for some cheer on our side. I foresee a steady stream of negative ads emanating from CNNs debacle ads constructed by the Biden campaign (who I read were giddy at the prospect), and The Lincoln Project, and any other Democratic group with a DVR setting and the ability to splice and dice. And as you mention, theres Jack Smith, who is nobodys fool. The prospects are delicious.
Fingers crossed. All the best to you.

(75,771 posts)that the defendent has caused health issues for many people, and well beyond covid. I do blame him for a heck of a lot of deaths and suffering from that, of course. But I think the overall stress that he has caused in society has taken a serious toll. I hope that you are feeling better!
I appreciate your response to the post below, too. Thank you.

(75,771 posts)I think that a lot of good people have what I consider unrealistic expectations. I've said numerous times that, even if and when convicted, the defendent is very, very unlikely to be incarcerated. And we have seen that, when charged, he was not put in handcuffs.
I anticipate that the DOJ and Georgia will indict the defendent relatively soon. In neither case is it realistic to expect him to be handcuffed, much less incarcerated while he awaits trial. Likewise, since in each instance his legal team can and will delay as much as possible -- and it will be frustrating for those seeking instant gratification -- and there is no evidence that I see that being indicted will deny him the republican nomination. Indeed, the most likely way it will be someone else heading the republican ticket would be if the stress takes a significant toll on the defendent's health. But anything can happen, and the unexpected often does.
However, things are catching up to the defendent. If he is the republican nominee, it will be their party's worst nightmare.
I'm not convinced there was any purpose to this let both sides be heard nonsense.
Trump was in control of the event, imo. Anyone who has watched him since 2016 should know that, he is a marketer.
Also, I am skeptical CNN had any sincere motives. Back in 2016, CBS exec was caught on audio stating Trump may be bad for the country but great for ratings. What has changed? I do not appreciate how since 2016, all cable shows talk about him almost non-stop.
There are so many issues they could be discussing, but it really is a mess in MSM land, imo.
H2O Man
(75,771 posts)And you definitely speak for a heck of a lot of people. No doubt about that, and I appreciate your noting very important factors.
With no offense to Ms. Collins, I think that if one has the defendent on, it should not be live, and that it should be one-on-one with someone like Glenn Kirschner asking the questions. The defendent will always be a blowhard, exactly as you noted. I think Joe Biden beat the defendent in debate, and someone like Glenn could say the things that Biden was surely thinking, but shouldn't say in the context of a presidential debate.
It is clear that the defendent has a talent for getting under people's skin. In order to watch him these days, I have to get in the same mindset I did when at the clinic or the county jail, I was dealing with a sociopath. I can honestly say that I do not see any significance between the defendent and the sociopaths in the jail, except they were born in distinct social classes. Thus, why someone like Glenn, who knows how to interview sociopaths, seems the obvious best option. Of course, the defendent wouldn't dare get in such a discussion.

(75,771 posts)I have a very high opinion of you, and always appreciate the common sense you add to the community's discussions.
Years ago, I had the opportunity to sit in while two federal investigators interviewed the only female sociopath I ever worked with. And she was good at being a very bad person. I doubt that, coming from the same social-economic background as her, the defendent wouldn't be as "successful" as her. And these investigators knew she had committed a series of federal crimes.
They didn't use the Reid Techniques for interrogation, as she was used to law enforcement doing. Nope. No emotion what so ever. And no allowing her to derail their questions. Nothing for her to playy off of. It was a thing of beauty. As she was being placed in handcuffs, she looked at me, grinned, and said, "No big deal. There's great sex in prison."
Investigators like them and Glenn are artists.

Sociopaths are unique and it is not without considerable study that techniques were developed.

(75,771 posts)the defendent will have a very bad day on May 23. Back in court in NY, for the judge to explain in great detail about his need to shut his mouth. Obviously, that will result in a further public melt-down, which will result in the first ruling of contempt of court. Most likely two more will happen this summer.

(278,668 posts)He really believes that the law does not apply to him.
He will learn very soon.
His ability to deal with pressure is becoming increasingly reduced. Things are falling apart around him. And he has no one around him that dares tell him that he is screwing up.
