Headline: New York High School SUSPENDS 13 Female Athletes Who Started Petition To Wear Sports Bras During Training
A New York high school is under fire online after they suspended the majority of the girls track team following an incident over the dress code.
With increasing temperatures, the students recently shifted to practicing outdoors. The boys track team began practicing shirtless which motivated the girls team to ask the schools athletic director if they could practice in their lycra crop tops or sports bras. The athletic director for the Albany school district, a woman named Ashley Chapple, felt that the sports bra attire would be too inappropriate. The girls were told their sports bras would be distracting for male coaches
According to sophomore sprinter Jordan Johnson, after practice one day Chappel confronted the female students about wearing sports bras adding that they couldnt wear the clothing because we have male coaches. The following week, any female athletes who arrived to practice in a sports bra were asked to leave the session. The same week that some of the female athletes were asked to leave their practice, other girls from the same track team were met by Chapple and security when they attended a school lacrosse game and prevented from entering. Following the lacrosse game incident, 13 members of the girls track and field team were suspended from school.

(1,912 posts)Well while thats true, and in this article it says the male coaches were distracted, Safe Sport training doesnt focus on just watching out for male coaches. The reality is that anyone coaching could be a problem and all coaches as Mandatory Reporters need to be on the watch for the sexualization of athletes (notice the non-gender noun there)
This article really disturbs me because what it does is it actually excuses that sexualization of children. Ralk about fucked up. These people are furthering the exact thing they think they are trying to prevent and doing it in a completely fucked up way.

(9,474 posts)Is what is really disturbing to me. It's not like they broke the rules, they were trying to change the rules. But I guess we now punish any sort of civic engagement we don't like now.

(10,038 posts)other than the title, thats says anything about a petition. Do you? "Petition" has a very specific meaning in regard to this situation. If they were actually suspended for petitioning they would probably have a solid 1A case against the school.

(13,702 posts)A sophomore sprinter from the girls Albany High track team named Jordan Johnson created the teams protest on the popular petition website Change.org.
There's more in the article, but the website is a royal pain in the ass to navigate.

(25,917 posts)they were suspended because "the girls used inappropriate language when asked to leave practice, despite being warned about their dress code violations."

When can we expect the MEN to control themselves, instead of putting the blame on the women?

The school and the town wouldnt say a word.
But because it is a school with captive inmates

I hope these wonderful young women feel validated that so many recognize the sexism attributed to them for nothing more than wearing a sports bra.

(42,660 posts)No excuse for the suspensions, but the fact is that the suspensions, handed down in May 2022, were rescinded a month later and a new dress code allowing athletes to wear sports bras was adopted a few weeks after that.

(28,451 posts)while at the same time make them think all the male coaches are pervs. Meanwhile, this woman is the thought police, assuming the male coaches wont be able to restrain their drool and bulging pants. This woman admin is completely fucked up and shouldnt be involved with public education. I hope the school gets sued and her ass gets fired.

(42,660 posts)The suspension should never have happened but a story dated 5/13/23 that describes the situation in the present tense is somewhat misleading. The suspension was meted out in May 2022 and was rescinded in June and a new dress code allowing athletes to train wearing sports bras was adopted in July 2022.

(64,951 posts)I think those coaches are looking at the wrong things.
They're supposed to be looking at technique & EVENT form, not the female form.
If they're that easily distracted, they need better coaches.

(3,635 posts)to wear sports bras in many sports and athletic competitions - as others have referenced above.
Also note in this story a female athletic director is the one who made this call based upon her own outdated assumptions - namely that the girls would wear overly revealing tops and that the male coaches would be affected by this.
The sports bras are not revealing, more utilitarian, and male coaches who are professionals would not leer or be affected in any way.
