"in self-defense If I hadn't-er killed you, you would have growed up to rule me."

This cartoon is from 1876; it is an example of how propaganda was used to brainwash White people to commit heinous acts towards Blacks, sounds familiar today, “in self-defense If I hadn't-er killed you, you would have growed up to rule me.”

They tried to make sure the history wasn’t erased at that time.

The next iteration would be this comic lit on fire by a thug in a suit reading: “in self defense, if you hadn’t-er tried to learn about makin’ things better I wouldn’t-er had to burn your learnin”

of southern "self defense" and is in no way supportive of it. Hence, it is
not (an example) of propaganda - but rather a condemnation of prevailing
southern attitudes of the time. You get that right?

The small, female child is portrayed as an innocent victim. The purpose of this cartoon is to get people to question white supremacy.

The propaganda (created by privileged whites wanting to maintain their position above both) is what caused poor whites to hate and fear blacks, hence the cartoon exposing that result. The cartoon isn’t being characterized as the propaganda.

... of the prevailing Southern attitudes, at least where the cartoon was published. Which shows that they ain't changed much, although "prevailing" would be a stretch -- now such attitudes are the province of a vocal and over-represented minority.

It's satirizing the racist's attempt at justifying his violence ..The bad grammar alongside a picture of a grown man standing over a tiny child are indicative of this.

SOUTHERN CHIV.: "Ef I hadn't-er killed you, you would hev growed up to rule me."
Notes: "Chiv" is a sarcastic reference to supposedly "Chivalrous" Southern US culture. Quote lettered to suggest rural dialect; in more conventional English it would be "If I hadn't killed you, you would have grown up to rule me."
Date 28 October 1876

I hardly know what to say... But, I can't deny some of those cretins with their attitudes are still around (can you say, MAGATs?)...

Even during the time it was published.

and yet - twitter feed goes with this

"is an example of how propaganda was used to brainwash White people to commit heinous acts towards Blacks"

which is not only inaccurate - but also just plain stupid.

don't appear to understand that the 19th cartoon is intended to criticize that aspect of southern culture instead
of promote it. Americans in general are so goddamn conceptually and contextually challenged. It helps me
understand how we got to this point. I want to go somewhere where people can read and understand
what the fuck they're reading. Political cartoons (and the example provided is one of those) use
hyperbole and satire to critique.

(which I hesitate to spread around too liberally - because, infectious, plus defeatism)

In that we are living in a world where more and more truth and accuracy - are considered essentially fungible commodity. In short - I'm not sure if there is a huge degree of 'misunderstanding' here (on the part of the original tweet, or subsequent follow up and promotion) - or whether there's a fairly significant proponent of 'just don't care.'
