That would help people choose a church that is tolerant, rather than bigoted.

(150,685 posts)to the book of Matthew. Read that and you'll know what "woke" means. A person can read the entire book in half an hour or so. Maybe an hour if you have to say the words as you read.
Shocking, isn't it?
And I'm an atheist. But, I know Matthew. When I was a kid in middle school, I memorized the entire book on a dare.

(8,555 posts)Have read and studied the whole bible. Memorizing the whole book of Matthew is pretty impressive, ngl.

(150,685 posts)Shocked my Sunday school teacher, it did. She didn't believe me, so I started reciting it. When I started on Chapter 2, she said, "That will do, young man." I think she was pissed off.

(7,942 posts)So on the morning recorded in Luke 4:18 when Jesus stood up in His local synagogue and read from Isaiah 61, declaring his Kingdom mission and mandate, we find God in Christ declaring in every sense of the word that he was Woke.
Not only was Jesus woke, but the gospels make it clear that He ministered in a way that showed that being woke meant serving, living and loving. And yet, Jesus never carried a billboard or led a political protest. He never incited any insurrection against the Temple or Roman rule or even spoke in overtly political tones.
He was a King however, a King who had ushered in a new Kingdom into human reality. A Kingdom that would rule from the inside out exposing the evils within the human heart and challenging us to first live in protest to the evils found there. Observe his approach

(150,685 posts)If you read the words in Matthew attributed to Jesus, it's quite clear what I mean.
Trouble is, most Christians haven't read those words, or have forgotten them. They weren't suggestions, either.

(16,385 posts)evangelicals are a lot worse than most Catholics. 50% of Catholics voted for Biden whereas only 15% of evangelicals supported him. I have a lot of problems with the Catholic Church hierarchy and the Opus Dei idiots on the Court but the rank and file are different in my experience. Btw, papist can be considered a slur, many Catholics have been killed by people yelling Papist!. My mom was hit with that slur by Baptists in Mississippi and they made her life miserable.

(44,738 posts)I early discovered that my most important job was to give money to the church on a regular basis. Ive been a recovering Catholic for a very long time. Rank and file Catholics are salt of the earth but with very little say in how the money is spent. The Catholic Church spent over 4 million in tax exempt money last year in Kansas trying to ban abortion. It was a losing effort. They spend lavishly on mansions for priests. Catholics bristle when I call a rectory what it is. What would Jesus do with all that money? What would he do to those mansions. Convert them to homeless shelters? Im not as familiar with evangelicals but if you believe instead of know, AND ACT ACCORDINGLY, I dont understand why you have a tax exemption. The only time I use papist, is in writing and on this site.
Ive discovered its very easy to do the Christian thing without being a member of a church. My wife and I have been very fortunate together for almost 50 years and we are very generous to those in need. And we pay taxes and are happy to.
We lived in Mississippi for 20 years. The religion is borderline intense. We lived near the coast. Beautiful geography, food incredible. But far from family.
Any relation to Frank?

(19,956 posts)sedate United Methodists. We did church every Sunday.
They were visiting a friend in California who invited them to church. It all seemed so innocent. And my parents were really strait. My dad was a tax accountant and mother taught 4th grade.
It was a Pentecostal church. People were talking in tongues and rolling around. It was awful.

MineralMan
(150,685 posts)As a non-believer in all things supernatural, I use the past tense to refer to people who were supposed to have lived 2000 years ago. I can only speak for myself, not for others.
In the first place, nobody with the name "Jesus" lived there at that time, so he would have had a different name that wasn't Latin-based.
