Work requirements for TANF and SNAP are counterproductive cruelty

...dreamed up by the phony right wing republicans as red meat for their anti-government voters.

Even in the red states which have high unemployment and poverty levels, this will just push more older people further into poverty.

It doesn't create opportunity for recipients - it just kicks them when they're already down by compelling them into this false and deceitful sham that pretends to transition them into work for an absolutely inadequate pittance, many cases all the food they have, that will now have an arbitrary end point without any assurance or even care anything has changed in the financial condition of the households.

I'm sitting here realizing this is supposed to happen because House republicans held the nation's credit and debt hostage. That relatively tiny percentage of the federal budget that goes into helping people from becoming so impoverished that they literally starve has an infinitesimal impact on the federal budget.

Once again, it's the poor and vulnerable among us who are made to sacrifice for a political 'deal.' The rest is also not about deficit reduction: IRS cuts, and a ridiculous Joe Manchin boondoggle he slipped into the debt limit deal meant to accelerate Mountain Valley Pipeline, a multi-billion-dollar natural gas pipeline that’s been repeatedly stalled because of environmental concerns.

Are we really letting this happen?

ppl who were trying to keep working, but not up to the levels, will go for full disability.
but the part they want is that they’ll work enough to get kicked off other bennies.

and youth aging out of foster care

While the budget agreement would raise the age for existing work requirements on able-bodied adults without children from 50 to 54, Biden was able to secure waivers for veterans and the homeless.

The deal carves out *new* exemptions for adults who would no longer be subject to ABAWD work requirements: veterans, youth aging out of foster care, individuals who are homeless.

Imposing work requirements on a subset of SNAP recipients for 6 more years is a pretty tiny price to play in exchange for not defaulting on the debt. Yes it is completely unethical for the gop to use the economy as hostages for this unrelated issue, but Biden did a great job of only conceding on a few minor things.

...and thus institutionalized charity so it could be more stiffly regulated by allowing the government to determine who is worthy and who is not worthy.

to the contrary. People getting these benefits are loafing, not interested in working, pretending to be disabled to get government benefits while you are working to support their lazy lifestyles. yadda, yadda, yadda.

It's the same old story over and over again.

I heard one person say "If you want health care, you have to earn it."

Then they put fingers in their ears so they can't hear your response.

If he "gave something away", I'm sure he has left wriggle-wriggle room to mitigate or reverse the damage.

The best course of action for these issues we care about is, for now, unify, get behind the President, and work together to elect more Democrats.

The worst course of action is to allow a government default, which will screw everybody for years, possibly for decades, possibly forever.

TANF and food assistance has been cut drastically. My friends (two sisters) who live in a senior community had their TANF cut from $250/month to $23. How the heck is someone supposed to live on $23 worth of food for a whole month?
