DeSantis wants Confederate general's name restored to army base

Gov. Ron DeSantis vowed to restore the name of a U.S. Army base in North Carolina to that of a Confederate general, the Raleigh News & Observer reported.

At a North Carolina GOP convention on Friday, DeSantis said that if elected president, he would change the name of the newly christened Fort Liberty back to Fort Bragg.

“It’s an iconic name and an iconic base, and we’re not going to let political correctness run amok in North Carolina,” DeSantis told the cheering GOP crowd.

Fort Bragg, named after Confederate general Braxton Bragg, was one of nine Army installations named after Confederates that are undergoing the process of a name change as part of a bipartisan defense appropriations bill in 2020.

I don't think most people have a problem with changing the name DeShithead. But keep grasping at straws.

Bragg was such a lousy Confederate officer, one could make the argument he was actually a double-super-secret Union agent.

He was that bad.

His halcyon days were during the Mexican–American War where he commanded an artillery unit and didn't screw up.

after Confederate generals.

They were all traitors, and do not deserve to be honored at all.

I think displaying the Confederate flag should be outlawed.

Why history real does need to be taught, and too fucking bad if someone's sensibilities are offended by the truth.

Those at least were named by defiant white Southerners.

Why the U.S. Army named bases after traitors is hard to understand.

I lived in the south in the 60s and people there thought the north was prejudiced against them big time. Rubbing their noses in their loss.

We in the north just thought it was history, over and done with.

obscure why Florida tried to secede in February 1861: the legislature voted to secede to preserve slavery.

Maybe he can contemplate what the then-governor of Florida did in 1865 when he realized that the Confederates lost.

Desantis is running for President, right? And the idea behind that is not to back yourself into a corner that you can't get out of or shake when you're in the general election, right?

So all of this appeal to a very narrow minority of voters, even within the GOP, doesn't make a lot of sense, unless this is who he really is and what he really believes, and it's not just political playacting, like I though it was. Maybe this is what he really thinks, and in that case, he's less qualified than I thought he was before.

If, and that’s a HUGE if, he prevails in the primary, he’ll pivot hard to the center in order to appease his big donors and attempt to appeal to independents and centrists. The big question is would the media and the DNC keep the heat on him for nonsense like this.

There are medal of honor recipients from North Carolina. One was Charles George a Cherokee who fought in Korea.

but Fort Liberty sounds like an after thought. Lets not offend anybody.

When I was in the Army I was stationed at:
Fort Leonard Wood (I do know about tis guy, but not because I was stationed there)
Defense Language Institute -- Shouldn't offend anybody. but did. There would be regular demonstrations because they taught Commie languages and many of the instructors were Commie feriners.
Ft. Huachuca. Probably a native American tribe
Ft. Polk. Have no idea, but was probably a Confederate
Ft. Meade, a Union General.
Next was Ft. Drum (NY) but I left even after the Army offered me Defense Against Electronic Surveillance and Warrant Officer schools to keep me.

The battalion CSM and my company 1SG, but the officers loved me and that pissed them even more. Polk was a hell hole. I was there before and during the formation of the 105th. Finally liberated and sent back to Huachuca for agent training.

DeSatan & Pence both want to reverse the name changes. It's funny. They want to "recognize history" and save the names of Confederates who fought against the United States... but at the same time DeSatan wants to erase history by banning books about factual history in America. More Hypocrisy.

""It's an iconic name and iconic base, and we're not gonna let political correctness run amok in North Carolina," DeSantis, who was referencing Fort Bragg, told a crowd at the North Carolina Republican Party convention Friday."

...further alienates the rest of the country in the general.

Does he think that all of this stuff will just go away? All of the video, the bills, the speeches? They will all exist and be absolute gold to the Biden campaign's comms team if Ronny makes it around Trump and to the promise land.

At this point he'd have a hard time winning re-election in Florida if he could go for another term with the hard right turn he's taken over the last couple of months.
