Former Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday said he could not defend the very serious allegations against former President Donald Trump in a federal indictment over the handling of classified documents.
Having read the indictment, these are very serious allegations. And I cant defend what is alleged, Pence said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal editorial board. But the President is entitled to his day in court, hes entitled to bring a defense, and I want to reserve judgment until he has the opportunity to respond.

(19,847 posts)Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley changed her tune on former President Donald Trump's latest legal troubles after he was slapped with a federal indictment on 37 counts related to his handling of classified documents.
"If this indictment is true, President Trump was incredibly reckless with our national security," Haley said in an interview with Fox News on Tuesday.
That's a more critical tone than the former South Carolina governor took last week when news first broke of Trump's second indictment during the 2024 presidential contest.
(snip)
During the Tuesday interview, Haley mentioned that her husband, Michael Haley, serves in the U.S. armed forces and will begin a yearlong deployment in Africa this weekend.
"This puts all of our military men and women in danger, if you were going to talk about what our military is capable of or how we would go about invading or doing something with one of our enemies," she said.

He certainly makes himself available for it which is why we got to see this pic as an example of the "cosplay transformation" of Romney (from Dec. 2016, although taken by a reporter) -

If you hear anyone arguing that its a nothingburger they have not read the indictment.

(89,129 posts)The way it's worded is important. I found it very clear and and easy to understand. It was a timeline with details of alleged offenses, whe, where, quotes, and background. VERY simple explanations. I'm not a lawyer and it did not "talk over me." It's a very instructional read. If you haven't read it yet, you should. Do yourself a favor!

Since the Department of Justice unsealed the indictment of former president Donald Trump last week, the pundits have been in overdrive assessing the contents - the details, the charges, the chances of a conviction, and the implications for the 2024 election. As a writing instructor, I cant help but think about the document itself, which is a surprisingly compelling read, especially for legal writing, a genre thats primarily focused on laying out the facts.
While the facts detailed in the indictment would be shocking no matter how they were presented, special counsel Jack Smith and his team made some intentional writing choices that make this document and therefore the case against Trump especially effective.
I tell my students that when they admire a piece of writing, they should try to figure out whats working so they can use those strategies in their own work. So what can we learn about good writing from the indictment? ...
The outcome of this case will, of course, depend on more than the strength of the writing in the indictment. But good writing matters, especially when you have a story to tell or an argument to make. In this case, the banal cadence of a standard legal document would not have been nearly as interesting or persuasive. In the age of ChatGPT, when formulaic writing will be ever easier to generate, those voices who can capture our attention and shape our understanding of the world will matter more than ever.
The article is short, to the point, and has a couple of specific examples.
Good writing!

(55,334 posts)When he was (to his credit) troubled by Trump's suggestion that he use his ceremonial position to pervert the 2020 results and throw the country into a crisis to suit Trump's purposes, he turned to Dan Quayle to ask "Hey do you think I can do this?" and Mr Potatoe Head replied "No, Jesus Jr, you can't"
Mike Pence may be a little slow on the uptake, but he does keep on landing on the correct side of the law, even when he's being threatened with murder. Maybe that's setting the bar low for Republicans. But history itself is set the bar low for Republicans.
