It also has an obsession with Campi Flegrei:

https://www.express.co.uk/news/science/1082527/mount-st-helens-eruption-volcano-big-one-warning-geologist-spt
This article was originally headlined "Mount St Helens eruption FEARS: Volcano expert warns 'I have never seen anything like it'". Dr Donald Swanson witnessed the eruption of Mount St Helens on 18 May 1980. His quote 'I have never seen anything like it' was in reference to that eruption. The doctor went on to explain the efforts which the United States Geological Survey undertake to monitor Mount St Helens. The doctor did not claim the Mount St Helens was 'erupting'. The previous headline inadvertently obfuscated the Doctor's quote and we are happy to set the record straight.

(8,685 posts)The quote from the lead author is this:
"Our new study confirms that Campi Flegrei is moving closer to rupture."
I would not characterize that as on the "verge" of erupting.
ITAL
(646 posts)But an eruption on the time scale they're talking is likely still decades away (given it's yellow on their rating system). Hopefully it's after I'm already gone, whenever it is!

As with all scientific papers, it only hints at what might happen.
It's up to the press to sensationalize it.

(25,987 posts)For volcanoes to blow, gases must build up faster than they can escape, and magma also needs to be able to move rapidly through the crust where a crack has formed. Scientists cannot know for certain these conditions have been met until an eruption takes place.
They added that if Campi Flegrei does erupt, it is more likely to be a small than a large explosion.

(3,618 posts)"Volcanoes reawakening after long repose must rupture the crust before magma can erupt. Rupture is preceded by repeatable variations in the rate of seismicity with ground movement, which trace the amount of applied stress that is released by local earthquakes. A rupturing sequence has been developing across four episodes of ground uplift at Italys Campi Flegrei caldera: in 1950-1952, 1969-1972, 1982-1984 and since 2004. We predicted in 2016 that the approach to rupture would continue after an additional uplift of 30-40 cm at the location of largest movement. We have updated our analysis with new data on changes in the numbers of local earthquakes with amounts of ground movement. Here we show that subsequent events have confirmed our prediction and that the unrest has been changing the structure of Campi Flegreis crust. The results provide new constraints for evaluating the volcanos potential to erupt or to subside without eruption...."

Campi Flegrei volcano is moving closer to rupture, not guaranteeing an eruption
Professor Christopher Kilburn, lead author and UCL Earth sciences expert, explained that while the study confirms the Campi Flegrei volcano is moving closer to rupture, it does not guarantee an eruption.
"The rupture may open a crack through the crust, but the magma still needs to be pushing up at the right location for an eruption to occur," he explained. "This is the first time we have applied our model, which is based on the physics of how rocks break, in real-time to any volcano.

We humans have all the technology we need to quit fossil fuels now. We just have to do it.
Alas, maybe human avarice and ignorance is a natural thing too.

Well there goes me, I thought, and immediately put it out of my mind and went back to recycling my trash, because there are things I can do something about and things that are beyond human scope.
Human avarice and ignorance what a beautiful planet we were given, and how sad the prospects seem now.
