The majority of the Supreme Court are right-wing extremists who are drunk on power and have given themselves the power to remake life in America.
They are operating in bad faith. They are twisting their interpretations of law to fit into their personal narrow political and religious views.

(7,448 posts)great "meaning" in the theocracy to come. And its not just these 6 judges, although they'd be corrupt regardless of what type of cases came before them. It's all the dark money in government in general, and all the bribes these SCROTUS judges are taking.
Damn! I'm sorry, but I am so livid with (especially) these two decisions, especially following on the heels of Biden's statement yesterday.
If no one in our government will do anything about the corruption, can we, as a class of people, sue for relief via the United Nations? Someone has to hear us and take us seriously. And what's going on in this country is every bit as bad as the courts and judges in those banana republics *rump kept whining about when he was in office.
Who do we shake up and how can we get them to notice we're saying "enough is enough"... DO something.

(25,355 posts)We should stay united and support each other. Embrace our LGBTQ+ friends and acquaintances. Embrace people of other cultures, ethnicities, and races. Help each other cope. Donate to organizations and candidates who support our values. Work for them.
And use some creativity. If you own a business, put a sign on the door that you do business only with LGBTQ+ customers. Turn the tables. Call it your religious belief. Many churches do embrace them.
Same with anti choice people. Say you deal only with pro choice people as a moral belief.
That's not actually creating divisions since they exist already. It is just acknowledging the differences and letting them experience the issues from the other side. Show them how exclusivity feels.
Or, the opposite. Kill them with kindness. Let them know your own feelings and beliefs and tell them that it won't change your feelings about them because you love them, too. Since so many of them profess to be religious, tell them that Jesus loves them, but is saddened by their hatreds.
Appealing to the UN will not work. They won't get involved in internal politics. The best we could get from them is a human rights violation statement, which has no teeth to it and would be vetoed by the US unless it was a statement backed by a General Assembly vote.

(151 posts)Yeah, That might work in very large urban area's but it will never happen most anywhere else. Most businesses, especially retail that I know go out of their way to stay out of politics. No matter which side you think is "the right side" they cannot afford to alienate ANY of their customer base and so wisely steer clear of it altogether.

(68,987 posts)Simple as that. Hillary Clinton talked about the Supreme Court throughout her campaign. There was already one vacancy - a nominee stolen from Obama by the Republicans - with other likely vacancies coming up.
These decisions would be 6-3 the other way if Hillary had been elected in 2016. Roe v Wade would not have been overturned.

Eventually things like contraception, divorce, interracial marriage, pornography, prayer, working on the Sabbath, these things will end up in court. The fanatics have their toehold now. They're going to go for even more extreme stuff.

(4,253 posts)they are looking into it. The problem is they are looking into past ethics issues and nothing but hand-wringing is being done about the ethics violations happening today. Starting now Congress should require each justice to sign, under penalty of perjury, a conflicts of interest statement for every decision it issues and the COI statement should be included with each decision. If a judge refuses to sign a COI their decision is void. If it is found that they filled out a COI but lied on the COI they can be removed from office for perjury.

BumRushDaShow
(166,120 posts)You just witnessed a President and party that DID "fight fire with fire" (student loan forgiveness), which was summarily batted down by a Supreme Court.
We saw back in 2012, an earlier Democratic President - "fight fire with fire" by barreling around the Senate's blockages of his Constitutionally-mandated authority to name "appointments" for his administratoin. And thus, despite the Senate having declared themselves to be in "Pro-forma" session, meaning they were technically NOT "in recess", that meant that no "recess appointments" could be made.
HOWEVER Obama DID make "recess apointments" anyway (several members of the "National Labor Relations Board" ). He was then sued and LOST at the... wait for it... Supreme Court -
Paul Lewis in Washington

The US supreme court has dealt a damaging blow to Barack Obama's presidency by unanimously ruling that he overstepped his constitutional powers when he filled high-level government vacancies without consulting the Senate. The ruling released on Thursday is a victory for Republicans, who argued Obama's unlawfully made use of a clause in the constitution allowing the president to make appointments during congressional recess as part of a patten in which the White House routinely acts outside of his authority.
However, in a majority opinion that infuriated conservative critics of the president, the supreme court simultaneously endorsed a broad interpretation of the circumstances in which a president can invoke the clause to appoint government officials without consulting the Senate.
While the nine supreme court justices were united in their belief that Obamas 2012 appointment of three officials to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) without Senate confirmation was unlawful, they were conflicted over exactly how much room for manoeuvre the president has when invoking a clause in the constitution intended to deal with periods the Senate is in recess.
By a narrow, five to four majority, the court opted for a broad reading of the recess clause, effectively rubber-stamping a practice which, they said, had been used routinely by presidents going back Andrew Johnson in 1867 without much objection from the Senate. That broader reading is reinforced by centuries of history, which we are hesitant to disturb, Justice Stephen Breyer wrote for the majority.

https://www.theguardian.com/law/2014/jun/26/supreme-court-rules-against-obama-recess-appointments
His appointees then had to step down.
There is really only one other "fiery" solution and you might not want to go there. Jack Smith is in the process of prosecuting a bunch who DID try to "go there". We could become a "banana republic dictatorship" and dissolve the Supreme Court, OR we can try to find alternate ways to get what we want until some of those RW loons finally retire.

I wrote an ask about it for my Indivisible group's next "Call to Action" email - which will be put together NEXT weekend, not this weekend. And there's plenty of time to refine and update. Everybody on the writing & editing team wants to take this weekend off because of the 4th of July next Tuesday. Nobody's gonna want to call their reps about any issue next week, and there'll be few, if any, staffers on duty locally or the state capitol or in DC to take calls anyway. Screw it.
