OceanGate Suspends Operations After Tragedy
Company says all submersible trips are off, at least for the near term

Has OceanGate sent its last submersible to the deep? The company behind last month's tragic Titanic excursion has suspended operations, reports NBC News. Details of exactly what that means were not immediately clear: The entirety of the company's announcement on its website reads, "OceanGate has suspended all exploration and commercial operations." The move comes nearly three weeks after five people—including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush—were killed when the submersible when they in imploded during a journey to the wreck of the Titanic.

Cyclops 1
500 meters (1,640 feet)

OceanGate Inc.’s Cyclops 1 submersible can transport up to five people to depths of 500 meters (1,640 feet). Not only has Cyclops 1 served as an observation platform for dozens of research projects, expeditions, and training dives, but it also served as a fully functional prototype throughout the development of Titan, acting as a test platform for software, technology, and equipment.

One would assume it's out of commission. Also, I read during construction, they abandoned the carbon fiber for a more conventional steel cylinder. Curious, no?

OceanGate worked on the design of its first custom-built submersible Cyclops, later called Cyclops 1, in collaboration with the University of Washington and Boeing. The hull was planned to be a carbon fiber hull, but OceanGate instead acquired a 12-year-old vessel Lula from a company in Azores. It extracted the cylindrical steel hull of the Lula and used it to create Cyclops 1. Cyclops was unveiled in 2015. The same year, the company moved its headquarters to the Port of Everett's Waterfront Center office space in Everett, Washington.

Now I am going to have to go run with the bulls or maybe visit Australia. I was thinking Everest, but I hear that place is trashed out. Not like the bottom of the ocean. Where, oh what? Never mind.

...seems to be negligence.
Yes, some seemed incompetent. Yes, there was sloppy & careless testing.
But, they were warned about the potential issues. Multiple times. They ignored them. They thought safety rules were a needless burden. They ignored them.
This sure seems to fit the meaning of gross negligence & reckless disregard.
