The incoming economy minister has addressed a rally organised by neo-Nazis, while the Speaker of Parliament has a decades-long track record of race-related court convictions and deeply disturbing blog postings.
As Finland's new coalition government is sworn into office on Tuesday, incoming Prime Minister Petteri Orpo is facing a public relations headache over the Speaker of Parliament and the Minister for Economic Affairs, both positions filled by the far-right Finns Party.

"I still and will continue to sincerely and wholeheartedly believe that if a woman who opposes the deportation of immigrant rapists is raped by an immigrant rapist, it is a happy thing," he later wrote.
Halla-aho has also targeted Finland's LGBTQ+ community.
"Violence is an underrated problem-solving tool today," he wrote in November 2008, during a discussion on whether to shoot a gay man in a Helsinki park.

The new Finnish coalition government has been plunged into crisis, as a key minister was forced to resign after it emerged he had called for Finland to support abortions in Africa to combat the climate crisis.
Vilhelm Junnila, of the far-right Finns party, resigned after a week of fiercely criticised revelations, including that he made jokes about Heil Hitler and had given a speech at an event attended by neo-Nazis.

On Thursday evening, a junior member of the coalition highlighted a parliamentary question Junnila had posed on the official record in 2019. Junnila, who as the economic affairs minister was one of 19 cabinet members, wrote at the time that it would be justified for Finland to shoulder its responsibility by promoting climate abortion, which he claimed would be a great leap forward for humanity.

(24,848 posts)It took over 70 days for them to come to a consensus on governing
With the pro-Nazi sentiments of some of the members of the far right Finns party having come out, one cabinet member already resigned, it's not an auspicious start
This also puts pressure on one of the coalition party members, the Swedish People's Party, the smallest member of the coalition. The coalition has 102 seats out of 200. The SPP holds 10 (maybe 12). It is a left party. Their leader already caved to the coalition on economic matters, and she is under pressure from her members. 7 of the party voted against one of the cabinet appointees.
The extremely popular president of Finland (who is normally silent on these matters) has criticized the events of the last two weeks.
Over half of Fins think the coalition will collapse within a year.
A lot sooner if the leader of the SPP is given the heave-ho

(79,846 posts)They live in a world where vast wealth, wealth, privilege always shields them, so they expect to be shielded from climate change as well. They also are used to making money on the tragedy of others, so see climate change as a money making endeavor.

(40,672 posts)There's also the problem that few have the imagination to visualize just how drastically we're changing our planet. We watch sci-fi shows with NYC flooded, a southwest without any water, but we don't think it can really happen in our lifetimes. If I lived in the southwest I'd move now. The migration this planet is about to experience is going to be epic. There won't be one place that's not affected. You'll either be leaving a place or living in a place where people are migrating. Anti-immigrations laws won't stop the flood of humanity. It's looking like Mad Max, not Star Trek, for the human race.

(79,846 posts)They just don't give a damn about anyone else.
And in fact they see it as an opportunity to make money and grab power with all the chaos.
They will find safe harbor even if they have to live on a space station or Mars.
That is how crazy and evil they are.

(40,672 posts)Cuz the disaster we once thought was decades away is now just around the corner. But I guess you're right. They just don't give a damn about anyone else.

(79,846 posts)The privileged class assumes this will help them against climate change.
Yes they couldn't care less about the pain, suffering, death of others.
They see us as stupid suckers who deserve what we get.
And collateral damage in their quest for power and wealth.
