I posted earlier about FB/Meta handing over messages that led to an arrest over abortion.
The point there was that by default FB messenger is unencrypted, and you have to choose to have them encrypted.
Signal, Meta’s own WhatsApp, or Apple’s iMessage do encrypt by default.
