all this hoo-haa about AI is way premature IMO

The term AI is fraught with unfounded meaning from science fiction literature, but so far most AI is just statistical modeling of word sequences based on training sets of internet text. Sure, it's a complex, sophisticated model, but it's not intelligent in any real sense. An AI might say "The blue dress looks nice," but it has no understanding of what blue is, what a dress is, or what constitutes looking nice. And it has no inkling what the emergent meaning of the sentence is. To the AI it's just word salad with high statistical likelihood.

That's not thinking, it's parroting, and without any understanding of anything it "says." AI won't be intelligent until it can understand its own words, or stated better, until it chooses words based upon understanding of the concepts underlying its language choice rather than just stringing together statistically likely sequences.

The main danger of modern AI is us thinking it's a real boy already.
