An early look at Ohio's Issue 1 breakdown

I have been looking at some results from Ohio’s Issue 1 election from the SOS website. With about 58k outstanding, about 3 million votes have been counted so far. There were 4.2 million ballots counted in the November 2022 election. Remember that included a hotly contested Senate race between Vance and Ryan.

Last night the 3 most populous counties (Cuyahoga, Franklin, and Hamilton) accounted for about 890k votes. The no vote won by a 3:1 margin in Cuyahoga and Franklin (these include portions of Cleveland and Columbus respectively) and 2:1 margin in Hamilton (Cincinnati).

Also notable, the total number of ballots cast were over 70% of the totals in November 2022.

Pretty impressive.

1. When Democrats vote, Democrats win

If only we could sustain the enthusiasm seen during this special election. Turnout was worrisome to me, but it’s gratifying to see victory by such a large margin.

Objectivity shows the GOP to be the antithesis of humanity.

It is excessive subjectivity and tribalism that keeps people from improving their life, choosing to be anti-them instead.

8. I don't understand why there has to be sustained enthusiasm.

Voting is an obligation and a privilege.

I remember people not getting enthusiastic about Gore or Kerry, or claiming they ran bad campaigns, but they both would have made excellent presidents and we wouldn't be in this Roe.v. Wade pickle if people had just done their job as voters. But they didn't because they weren't excited enough by these very qualified candidates. It really makes me angry that neither was elected even though they represented the values of more Americans than Bush did. It's not the Super Bowl where you have a team and run out and buy a jersey and wave pompoms around. It's our lives at stake and now maybe our democracy.

14. Not everyone is a political animal

Some people have so little interest in the world at large that they can’t be cajoled into voting unless it directly impacts their self-interests.

18. Remember - the "no" vote included independents - and a fair number of republicans.

So yes - we need to keep up the enthusiasm, but we also need to be careful not to assume that even if we can sustain it - all of the "no" votes will be with us in the future.

2. The SCOTUS

The SCOTUS has activated a massive new block of voters. Millions of new voters will be voting in every election going forward and they're mostly young voters who care about women's rights.

3. How badly the BS Roe decision from Alito, Roberts, Thomas, Gorsuch, Amy C Barrett will backfire

on their hateful RW party-- and if Dems continue to educate voters, may result in a sufficient Congressional majority to revamp and reclaim some oversight with respect to their own lack of ethics and excesses. That will be a "burn" for decades.

4. The GOP dog has caught the car

Women and the youth vote are now and will be hammers because they are not going back on
women's health care and LGBT rights.

5. 2022 was stunning

I know it might not feel like it. But 2022 was an absolutely stunning performance by Dems. Inflation alone should have dictated a red wave. Republicans underperformed drastically because of Roe.

My teens and their friends and classmates really don’t care what gender someone is or who they love.

They think us hateful old people are nuts. They are politically active. My 17 year old can’t wait until he’s 18 so he can run for mayor.

16. And the GQP has an uphill battle because

Their old stalwart voters are getting culled by Ceiling Cat (especially the many Silent Gen Republicans) and are not being replaced as Gen Z ages in to voting.

10. JD Vance is Ohio's Senator

They voted for that over Tim Ryan and JD Vance was campaigning for the Issue.

I hope people are waking up and next year will re-elect Sharrod Brown and vote Gym Jordan OUT!
