New International Version
5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew[a] you,
before you were born I set you apart;
I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.
I am not watching the debate so

(1,922 posts)The Old Testament verse on the subject is Exodus 21:22-25, and it says that if the fetus dies, the assailant must pay monetary damages to the husband. If the pregnant woman is injured, the assailant gets the same injuries inflicted upon him. If the pregnant woman dies, the assailant is put to death.
It's the source of the "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth ,,," sayings.
So really, in biblical times, a fetus was only considered "property" until birth.
And "property" of the husband, not the woman carrying it, at that.
Drawing the first breath was the benchmark for classifying a fetus as a "person."
Until then, it wasn't a "baby" to them. Yet now, the aim is to designate even an embryo as a "baby."
There's some serious disconnect between what Old Testament says and what is being said today.

(21,224 posts)I am a New Testament Christian that follows the words and teachings of Jesus in the New Testament. I have a hard time with the Old Testament because we dont know who wrote it or edited it. I always take a dimmer view when I hear its quoted.

(95,257 posts)It is simply the usual claim to omniscience tricked up gaudy. Yes, the deity knows everything, always has, nothing happens the deity did not know would eons ago, did not, even, cause to happen eons ago. In this case, the recognition and marking out of a particular prophet, one Jeremiah. He is a bit awkward to look into, an extremely unpleasant creature with a foul diet, though the account given of him cannot be true in detail, for the activities ascribed to him would not be tolerated in a besieged city. In modern political terms, he was a defeatist and a quisling who, when his country was assailed by a powerful neighbor, announced their attack was blessed, and certain of success. Because the deity wanted the people punished, for something or other....

(3,784 posts)The problem is, just like pretty much EVERY piece of scripture they quote to justify their backward-ass thinking, it has absolutely nothing to do with abortion, and absolutely nothing to do with "when life begins." People who have actually READ the Bible know that it's basically PRO abortion. There's even a segment in there containing a recipe for an abortofacient (a concoction you can whip up to feed to a woman to cause an abortion).

(16,829 posts)But its not an imperative or a law of any kind. Its a poetic statement on God's love for an individual. It takes some major calisthenics to make it about abortion.
