The petitions for secession from the U.S. filed by Texas, Louisiana, and five other states have collected more than 25,000 signatures each, which the White House website says is enough for review and response.
WASHINGTON - Citizens from more than 40 states have filed petitions with the White House seeking to secede from the union, and by Wednesday, seven states had gathered enough signatures to qualify for a response to the largely symbolic protest.
The petitions, which have been signed by a small percentage of state residents, have virtually no chance of succeeding. The United States' bloodiest conflict, the 1861-1865 Civil War, erupted after 11 states withdrew from the union.
The White House has set up a "We the People" page on its website that allows Americans to file petitions on issues of concern. If a petition collects 25,000 signatures, the website says, the administration will review and respond to it.

I wonder how many of these petitions my moronic brother has signed.
Also, I love this one from the article: A counter-petition has been filed calling for the state capital Austin to secede from Texas and remain part of the United States.
Probably the same 25,000 on all seven petitions.

Of course, it is all Obama's fault that when he retired from the military that he didn't get right back on as a private citizen doing the same job. Last I had heard, was that he was still trying to get back in, so maybe this is changed. Never the less, if he signed any of these or even the promotion of them on his facebook page could put an end to that.
He as proved for many years that Military Intelligence is an oxymoron.

(13,556 posts)I sure some RWers have signed all the states with a petition multiple times.
It's really meaningless to the wishes of states residents.
I hope this stupid thing dies out pretty soon.

(42,770 posts)throughout the entire election period ALWAYS thought Romney was ahead...that was all they heard. Hopefully, now, they will open up their minds to looking at information on a broader basis. And it hurts us too - instead of having them be aware of all Romney's shortcomings and gaffes and cruel attitudes toward the less fortunate - and knowing this caused the loss - they think Obama stole it.

Symptoms: Delusion, depression and anxiety and a loss of reality, fabricated from the misinformation fed constantly through the hypnotic waves from the screen in your living room.
People who are FOXicated believed before the election that their candidate was going to win and following the election are in a state of denial about the facts that they were lied to and the reasons their candidate was beat so soundly.
I like the term FOXicated.

(9,609 posts)It was VERY disappointing on election night hearing that NC turned back red. I LOVED the diversity of everyone on the North Carolina for Obama team. But sadly I think that the NEGATIVE ads against Obama worked for the GOP and scared their base into thinking that Obama hasn't brought any jobs to NC - government doesn't create jobs BUT there are TONS of jobs coming back to NC. And then there were tons of stories I heard of people across the state that were given a hard time at the polls - my mom included. She was told to fill out a special form due to change of address which was a lie. So nope, I'm not convinced that Romney truly won in NC.
Obama won in Guilford County (where I reside) and for that I can be proud. I was driving around town near UNC-G that Sunday after the first debate (when feelings were low for all of us) and in the residential area I saw numerous Obama-Biden signs and I felt great again. I hope the President knows that he still has our support in NC. Hope he comes back numerous times during his second term. Shook his hand (and Biden's too!) in 2008 and I will never forget it.
But these people that want to secede here in NC, I will glady help them pack and leave!

(2,730 posts)whole argument about secession is unConstitutional. You have to have a referendum voted on by the citizens of each state. Then the legislatures of each state would have to vote. A State like North Carolina wouldn't approve of secession if you go county by county and see which ones President Obama won. It would not pass in the counties where North Carolina have their largest cities because each county voted for President Obama.
Take the capitol city of Raleigh which lies in Wake County. President Obama won that county by some 50,000 votes which wasn't even close. Then you move to Mecklenberg County which has North Carolina's largest City of Charlotte which has over 700,000 people. President Obama won that county by over 100,000 votes. Charlotte is North Carolina's largest city and Raleigh is the second largest.
President Obama also won the counties that has Greensboro,Winston Salem,Durham,Asheville and Fayetteville by significant margins. None of those counties would vote to secede from the Union and all of them have a significant minority population in those cities.
Before the Old South seceded, they voted on a referendum by each county and the news papers in those states also supported secession. Every major news paper in North Carolina supported President Obama. So the notion that North Carolina would secede from the Union is stupid and would not be supported. North Carolina's State Supreme Court is also dominated by Democrats. North Carolina's Secretary of State is a Democrat also. The best thing for a citizen of North Carolina who wants to secede from the United States is to flee the country and denounce their citizenship. That would be more easier if that is what they want to accomplish which should be the President's answer.

(33,164 posts)These people are free to give up their Citizenship in the United States of America at any time they choose.
Individually.
At which point all rights and privileges of U.S. Citizenship would cease and they would become Illegal Aliens in territory sovereign to the United States.
Now, if they would like to keep driving, they may proceed to get a driver's license from U.S. States which offer them, if they qualify. But, the usual restrictions of valid insurance and other ID would remain in effect.
'nuff said.

(146,317 posts)Not a single one. Individuals have started each and every one of these petitions, and there is not even any restriction on who signs them, so signers do not even have to be from any particular state.
The White House response should be quite simple: "There is no constitutional path to secession, and if there were, it would not be via citizen petitions signed by 0.1% of any state's population. Further, these petitions are not even signed exclusively by residents of the states they purport to represent. Sorry."

(25,415 posts)This article puts it very well:
"The federal government would obviously stop sending money to the states. Most of the red states now the New Confederacy had heretofore taken more federal aid than they paid back in federal taxes. South Carolina, for example, takes $1.38 in federal money for every dollar it pays in federal taxes. Louisiana takes $1.45 for every dollar it pays into the system. Talk about moochers and freeloaders. By the way, this money is redistributed from other states, including the blue states with their abortion-on-demand and evil healthcare mandate. After secession, that gravy train would cease to exist. Farmers, corporations, small businesses, universities and law enforcement would crumble without federal aid grants, contracts, matching funds, tax breaks, etc.
If the reality of losing federal money wasnt enough to convince the New Confederacy to stop behaving like petulant, tantrum-throwing children, then an array of more hard-core sanctions would begin. Its likely the power grid, pipelines, shipping lanes and, yes, satellite and internet communications would be summarily blocked by the U.S. government. The confederacy would be totally cut off from the rest of the world. Meanwhile, without federal regulations on food safety, clean water, clean air, and without the CDC, rampant disease would spread across the confederacy. How would northern medical equipment and pharmaceuticals reach the seceded states? Inflation would skyrocket as demand for dwindling supplies increased. Black-marketeers would spring up in every town.
The solidly blue areas inside the seceded states Austin, for instance would be the Texas equivalent to West Berlin in the heart of East Germany. Wed have to airlift supplies to those areas and hope that hoards of desperate and well-armed suburban and rural warlords didnt swoop in try to swipe the supplies. Needless to say, there would be a large scale humanitarian crisis."

It would suck for them. Oh well.
