government control over internet access (ie selectively closing access) is the unspoken goal. Kind of like freedom of the internet in communist China. I think OWS using the internet to coordinate was gunpowder added to the SOPA fire.

The US should not have hegemony over it, nor control over the main source to which alternative media is dependent. Wether it is a claim of taking your liberties to protect your 'patriotic nation' from terrorists, hostile countries, crime or an outdated copyright industry with use of mostly 'preemptive measures', then maybe thing twice
