I think Elizabeth have more power than the old guard may think. There's a lot of folk across America who will back her up if she needs.

(6,994 posts)but he seemed as if he wanted a vote now before the new Congress.which would probably not make it through and he would have bragging rights to say he tried.
..I think the new Senators are serious about changing the status quo and if I was Harry Reid I would not push or pressure the women too much 'cause they may have just brought their "clippers" with them to DC
frazzled
(18,402 posts)This is a bit presumptuous of her.
Jeff Merkley, Tom Udall, Kristen Gillibrand, and Tom Harkin (but especially the first two) have been working on this for the last four years: I've signed plenty of their petitions. I'm glad Elizabeth Warren is joining them, but the junior senator from MA should not be claiming to be the white knight of this thing before she's even taken office.
CTyankee
(63,912 posts)I think the American people are looking for action, not a lot of words. If Warren can get something done doing things differently, she should try.
frazzled
(18,402 posts)Tom Udall and Jeff Merkley have created a detailed plan, which involves limiting the types of legislation or nominations open to filibuster, and forcing forcing floor speeches if it's used. Elizabeth Warren is joining them. Let's give them all credit.
And let's also remember Lawrence O'Donnell's advice to all the new senators. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama did not get where they are by flashing themselves around when they got to the Senate. I'm sure Elizabeth Warren is going to put her nose to the grindstone and listen and work like a dog when she gets there, but us elevating her to queen of the filibuster reform movement or savior of the senate is not the kind of thing that helps her senate career in the end.
edhopper
(33,587 posts)Did you see the part where she says she is joining the very Senators you name for reform?
I don't get your problem?
She is not a politician, she went to the Senate to do something for us.
demwing
(16,916 posts)not yours, but those who want Warren to slow down. Someone down thread actually said she needed to be "schooled."
If MA wanted the status quo, they would have sent Scott Brown back to the Senate instead of back to the unemployment line.

(63,912 posts)But new voices and fresh faces can add to the mix and I think Warren is a treasure. She is hard working, brilliant and a formidable opponent for the Republicans. I sure as hell wouldn't want to go up in a debate against her...

frazzled
(18,402 posts)And I've been following the filibuster reform efforts for quite a few years. (It's how I ended up on Jeff Merkley's mailing list even though I don't live anywhere near Oregon.)
My point was that the OP was trying to make EW somehow the lone superwoman of this effort. A header with a link and "go Warren" is hardly sufficient to express the long, hard work that has gone into the attempt to get filibuster reform. Are we interested in the issue, or are we just interested in creating new heroes?

Senator Warren is doing what all progressives have been aching for Harry Reid to do - and to not make another deal with Turtleman and his corporate cronies in the Senate even if they promise to behave this time (which is why Reid didn't pursue filibuster reform in 2010).
Let's hope Harry Reid doesn't play Charlie Brown to their Lucy holding the football again like he did in January 2010.

(11,138 posts)I've noticed that thread titles around here (well OK, most of the internet really) tend to the hyperbolic. Rarely do the linked stories justify the thread title. And of course, many if not most of the responders in the thread respond to the inflammatory thread title and not the actual news itself. The internet has expanded greatly the availability of information, but it has also lowered our collective attention span to that of the dog from the movie "Up" *squirrel!*.
To sum up, Warren did nothing more than express support for the work other Senators have been doing for years.

THIS is why we supported her. THIS is why Republicans hate her and tried to 'put her in her place' but failed.
That's not what you are suggesting is it, that she should 'know her place, meaning sit down and shut up? Because she will not, and that is why we helped get her elected.
So far, she's doing great. And if it upsets the old, DC Club, then we KNOW she's on the correct path.

once i tried to help an old man to cross the street. he spit on my shoes and asked if id always be there to help him across. i said no and went on my way. elizabeth didn't get her shows spit on. she just lifted the old man above her head, ran across and was there every afternoon following to do the same.

It's going to take women to change that 'reality' you speak of which has lasted way, way too long to the detriment of the American people, and Elizabeth Warren apparently understands that this is the reason she is there, to begin that task.
So far, she's doing great smashing the illusion that what you just referenced as if it was a good thing, the old, DC anti-people policies, and this is why we supported her, from all across the country.
BlueMan Votes
(903 posts)Just that it's the reality of how things work in the senate.
sabrina 1
(62,325 posts)what is 'not good'. No way are people going to just sit back and accept 'the way it is' when the 'way it is' has been so bad for the country.
You are free to simply accept things as they are, but fortunately throughout history people have come along and changed things no matter how entrenched they may be, and little by little made this a better world
The people obviously are not at all happy with 'way things are' and we started the ball rolling to change things, by electing people like Warren and by being there behind her and letting them know, to support her.

Elizabeth is awesome, a genuine Democrat.
We will see, on the first day of the new Senate, which Dem Senators vote with her on this issue.
Any Dem Senators who do not vote with her on this issue will be put on notice; they should start looking for a new job immediately thereafter, because they will be marked as traitors.

(11,464 posts)Why would President Obama hire Spitzer after the Betrayus episode? I seriously doubt he would.
It will be hard enough getting Susan Rice through, and there are more important things to do capital wise.
As for Warren, she would better make sure she can come through, otherwise, she will Dennis Kucinich herself before she even starts.
I think a line item veto for the President would be a good thing, allowing Obama to pick and choose.

(11,464 posts)but Dennis knew he was way left but ended up on the left, like the extremists on the right-
with little to show for it, except the base loved it. (Rand Paul wants alot of things on the right, but he ain't getting them. Same things happen on the left too).
Kennedy was big proponent of making sure to attempt to do things that were feasibly possible
because the system works slowly
I hope they do something about the fillibuster, but I am not sure "it is a done deal"
I do hope Elizabeth Warren is the strong arm voice LBJ as Senator was but that means she will need to win the issues she says.
(example in the house- Ron Paul kept yapping about an audit on the Fed, and retired this week BASICALLY admitting he was a total fraud and got no accomplishments to show for it)
