At least 100 people have died and 150 others are injured after a fire broke out during a wedding in Iraq's biggest Christian town.
Hundreds were celebrating in a banqueting hall in Qaraqosh in Nineveh province when it happened.
It is not known what started the fire but some reports suggest fireworks set it off.
Flammable panels fuelled the flames, causing parts of the ceiling to catch fire and fall, fire officials said.
"The fire led to the collapse of parts of the hall as a result of the use of highly flammable, low-cost building materials that collapse within minutes when fire breaks out," Iraq's civil defence directorate said, quoted by state news agency INA.

(24,693 posts)People can be exceptionally stupid with fireworks (and guns).
Several years ago in upstate New York, a man and his brother were setting up the fireworks for the gender-reveal party for the man's unborn baby (that's really a thing!). The day before the party, the two men decided to stage a rehearsal. The explosives went off killing the man and severely injuring his brother. They couldn't just have pink or blue balloons? Now the baby will grow up without its father. Pathetic.
Fireworks in a fucking hall?! Also, it sounds like the building materials weren't up to the safety codes we have in the U.S.That'll be a wedding few will forget.

(10,833 posts)Once.
Ever since, if I'm in any kind of small, crowded venue, I stand towards the back and immediately clock where each and every entrance and exit is.
It's one of those things you will not forget for the rest of your life.

There are no payoff windows, since it's starting to look like there'll be no one left to collect their winnings either way.
