(7,650 posts)He's already said that you don't have to be a sitting member of Congress to be elected speaker!
If true, that would put tRump 3 levels away from President again. With a plum role for Gaetz in the new junta.

(194,996 posts)If just a few Republicans arent present the Dems could win the speakership. A majority of votes is needed not a majority of members.

(14,554 posts)Seems they are in control of this moment. Kevin depends on the Dems for his Speakership to continue. But would the Dems prefer to keep him and pwn him? Or are they brokering a deal with 10 or so moderate GOOPers who put up a sane Republican?

(5,929 posts)If Dems voting to save McCarthy might be good strategy - it would be a giant eff you to Gaetz and a message to McCarthy that "if you work with us we'll help you."
Make a real public statement: "We disagree with the other side's decision to do this. We are here to govern and repeated speaker votes are a waste of time. We still have a budget to negotiate. Democracy means not always getting everything you want. The freedom caucus needs to grow up and learn that lesson."
Unless there is someone else better who can be named who can get enough votes.
