Can Trump Be Gagged?
October 16, 2023 at 6:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Politico: “That’s the question at the heart of a federal hearing Monday, when U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan will consider whether to order the former president to stop attacking potential witnesses, prosecutors and court officials involved in his federal case over election fraud.”

“If Chutkan agrees that Trump’s penchant for public invective should be restrained, it will be his first brush with court-ordered consequences in a criminal case — consequences that, at least in theory, could be backed by the threat of jail time.”

“And a gag order would immediately raise two questions that could define his bid to retake the White House: Is Trump capable of abiding by a court-ordered restriction on his speech? And what is Chutkan prepared to do if he isn’t?”

Trump puts everyone connected to the trial in danger.

Will the judge do her job and start protecting them?

Or keep protecting Trump?

He has hurt a lot of people. He's and his entire crew are reptiles. However, cutting his tongue out would be an unmanageable disruption of norms.

The fascists in the GOP would love to see us act as badly as they do.

(Still, if you slipped him some Ex-lax on the way to jail I would find it very hard to say anything about it.)

He's indicted. He's going to trial. His right to "free speech" is qualified.

He can talk about his proposed policies. He can criticize his political opponents.

He can't talk about his place in the Judicial System.

The best thing to do is surround him with a prison. Restriction apply there, a lot of hoop jumping would be required to let him have access to the public in any way.

What kind of gag order does it take to shut him up? He's laughing at the legal system and the system is letting him get away with it.
Why the hell are so many legal folks afraid of him? He's an ordinary citizen, just like you and me. I don't get it.
All the indictments and still he's walking around spewing hate and discontent with the legal system, threatening prospective jurors, bad mouthing judges and his own lawyers and nothing happens to him!
I. Don't. Get. It.

He's a narcissist, and narcissists will say *anything* to win an argument. It doesn't matter if it's true or or cruel or stupid, they'll say it.

If you've never dealt with one, up close and personal, you have no idea what can come out of their mouths when they want to protect their egos, or when they hold a grudge.

I have. My father was the malignant variety, and my mother was the garden-variety narcissist. The things that I've witnessed them saying--even to their own family (including me)--would shock you. And, if they're really sick, they'll get other people to say it for them. Like when my da used to to have toddler me running around the house saying "Mummy's ugly!" For the cruelty of it.

My own mum calls me ugly and fat when she's mad at me when I disagree with her and *especially* when I'm winning an argument. She said it when I put on some weight in my later years. She said it when I was a teen model weighing around 105 at 5'5". IOW, she's said it all of my life.

It isn't dementia that makes them say these things that sound demented *to you.* It's their narcissistic rage/injury that makes it okay to say anything to win.

And it may even be a terminal lack of cojones, if they allow Trump to ride roughshod over the whole legal system and keep stalling things until he's able to get back into the White House in 2024 / 25. Unfortunately, a mental image that I have of Garland is someone who is always holding his finger up to see which way the political wind is blowing. Glenn Kirschner is absolutely right - Garland's judges and DOJ have all the means and tools at their disposal - but do they have the political will and cojones to use them???

Merrick Garland has bloody bugger all to do with issuing a gag order.

Why do people expect things of people that they are not legally permitted to do?

Does no one bother to learn the mere basics of how the judicial system works?

Also he ‘forgets’ to not say things he shouldn’t.
He’s playing us and the MAGA crowd too.
Maybe he needs to start his trial next week instead of next year.

A few convicted felonies under his belt will clamp his mouth shut, I believe.
OR have him arrested and spend ONE night in a Georgia jail. I think he might actually get the message.

Because he's too stupid and self-centered for that.

The best we can hope for is how it will amuse us for that miserable slob to be in jail. And to show even the faintest sign of a functioning and functional justice system.

Good enough reason for me.

What happens when he violates the order? Because of course he'll violate the order - probably by the end of the day.

He isn't going to care all that much about monetary sanctions unless she can impose some VERY HIGH sanctions. Will she be willing to move the trial up, or impose more restrictions on his bail? Is she willing to throw him in the can? I hope she's willing to do something that will MAKE him care about the consequences.
