A Black man who spent 16 years in prison after being wrongfully convicted of a violent crime was shot and killed by police in Georgia on Monday.
Leonard Cure, 53, was killed after a sheriffs deputy pulled him over in south-eastern Georgias Camden county early on Monday morning. The Georgia bureau of investigation (GBI) is examining the shooting.
Cure was released from prison in Florida in 2020 after a conviction review unit exonerated him of robbing a drug store in 2003.
The Innocence Project of Florida represented Cure in his exoneration case. The groups executive director, Seth Miller, said he was devastated by news of the death.
I can only imagine what its like to know your son is innocent and watch him be sentenced to life in prison, to be exonerated and then be told that once hes been freed, hes been shot dead, Miller told the Associated Press.

(4,002 posts)Hopefully there is Dash Cam footage or Body Cam footage of what happened. There is a lot left out of the story (like the reason for the traffic stop and why he was going to be arrested).
Cure got out of the car at the deputys request, the GBI said.
Cure complied with the officers commands until learning that he was under arrest, the statement said.
The GBIs statement said the deputy shocked Cure with a stun gun after not complying with the deputys requests. In its statement, the GBI accused Cure of assaulting the deputy, who shocked Cure with a stun gun a second time and struck him with a collapsible baton with which law enforcement officers are often equipped.
However, Cure still did not comply, the GBIs statement alleged. The deputy pulled out his gun and shot Cure.

(18,065 posts)I just hope there is footage of the arrest. And of course no mention of the murdering enforcers name.

(556 posts)Every fucking day I become aware of one of my black brothers and sisters murdered on the streets by a Thin Blue Line Gang member. Specialized groups with many hours tactical training CQB etc should be called if there is even a remote chance of using firearms. These street unit patrol officers are not trained well enough to make quick accurate decision based on the videos I see where officers fire and are not aware of cross fire and innocent civilians downrage. Im so not comfortable with these clowns having ABSOLUTE power over innocent PEOPLE OF COLOR!

(7,395 posts)That Cure was wrongly convicted of, and received a huge amount of compensation?
Wouldn't surprise me if the GA state police enacted some retribution of their own because of this.
The deputy that pulled him over (citing a so-far "questionable" reason for the stop), is around 53. That means he was early 30s when that crime happened. Did/does he know that family?

(25,355 posts)If he knew who the driver was, that would be enough. Many cops resent it when someone is released by the Innocence Project or on parole. They are convinced that criminals get off easy and lie their way to parole or an overturned conviction.
I know of a case where a couple young guys kidnapped a kid for ransom. The kid died. The kidnappers a got long sentences. I don't know the exact sentences, but one of them was released on parole after 25 years.
Shortly after his release, I was in the town where it had happened, on my way to a nearby town to visit a friend.
I stopped at a diner for lunch. It was big news there. Every one in the diner was talking about it, including about 4 cops in a booth, apparently on a lunch or coffee break. They were bragging about how they would take care of the paroled kidnapper. I had no clue what it was about but heard the cops say that they would keep a close watch on the guy and catch him in a parole violation to send him back. If he didn't do something to get him on, they'd "find something." They laughed about what a shame it would be if he tried to run or resisted when they arrested him.
When they got called away and left, I asked a waitress what it was about and she filled me in.
In that case, the cops, kidnapped kid, and kidnappers were all White, so the issue was not race. The cops decided to dish out their own justice.

(980 posts)shooting to disarm, and start shooting to kill?
The cop will probably get off with vacation or desk duty while they investigate, then, if found guilty, get a slap on the wrist, and go to another town and be a cop there. What is wrong with the US that they let this sort of thing go on?

Peace to his family and his community

(18,335 posts)But Cure was doing 90 in a 70
Passed several cars instead of immediately slowing and pulling onto the shoulder
Started grappling with the officer on the side of a busy interstate
Officer attempted two less lethal methods to subdue him before resorting to shooting him
The officer was justified in both stopping him and attempting to arrest him. I guess the officer could have backed off and allowed him to continue on his way jeopardizing the public with his speeding. That is unless Cure decided to continue the confrontation further jeopardizing the officer's life by wrestling him or pushing him into oncoming traffic or getting access to his gun.

(6,269 posts)the target on Mr Cures' back has been there since he was born. The police took advantage of this man. No doubt.
