Republican House speaker, who has advanced extreme views as attorney and legislator, says I am a Bible-believing Christian

Questioned about comments and actions deemed by many to be homophobic, the new Republican US House speaker, Mike Johnson of Louisiana, told Fox News his worldview was: Go pick up a Bible.
Speaking on Thursday, Johnson said he genuinely love[d] all people regardless of their lifestyle choices.
This is not about the people themselves. I am a Bible-believing Christian. Someone asked me today in the media, they said, People are curious. What does Mike Johnson think about any issue under the sun? I said, well, go pick up a Bible off your shelf and read it thats my worldview. Thats what I believe and so I make no apologies for it.
The Louisianan, 51, won his final vote without Republican dissent but is a controversial pick nonetheless. Before entering Congress in 2016, he was an attorney for rightwing Christian groups and a state legislator. In both roles he advanced extreme views, particularly against abortion and LGBTQ+ rights.
Johnsons work for the Alliance Defending Freedom has attracted widespread attention. The Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors far-right activity, calls the ADF a hate group a label it rejects.

So we're obviously overdue.
Student loans, medical debts, mortgages, credit card debt all should be forgiven.
That's only of course if you truly read and follow the Bible.

Separation of Church and State is clearly stated, and guns, militias and well regulated is as well. The read the CONTSTITUTION, as MTG pronounces it, the document she swore on the BUYBULL to protect, just like evilgelicals read that BUYBULL. All up to their own warped interpretation. And we all must live by.

(82,849 posts)So Mike will enact legislation that makes sure the hungry are fed, the homeless are sheltered, the sick and imprisoned are well cared for? He's going to welcome the alien and succor the widow and the orphan? He'll support economic programs that make sure that those who have much do not have too much and those who have little do not have too little? There's a LOT in the Bible about that, in both the Hebrew and the Christian Testaments.

You know. All those parts of the book most of its followers pretend don't exist.

(42,896 posts)some of what's on your list are really in it, though. Maybe Leviticus, but... Definitely not in the New Testament, which is the actual basis of Christianity.

(25,464 posts)Thoughts that a person can't defend by logic. The idea liberals haven't read the Bible or aren't religious is silly. These American Taliban types are typically unable to produce sound policies and often simply use bigotry to distract from their number one tenant, greed is good. An idea not generally lavished by his beloved Jesus.

(42,663 posts)Ive been reading a lot about biblical stuff lately. What the texts say, in context with what would have been the original meaning at the time. Homosexual orientation didnt exist in the minds of the writers, what they were talking about on the OT is taking a passive, penetrative role like a womanin other words, its misogynistic.
Abortion is in no way condemned in the Bible. They do a lot of biblical tap dancing to claim it does.
If I can do that, anyone can. Lots of info out there.
This horrific take is a deliberate choice. Which creeps me out.

(25,145 posts)I'm pretty sure believing that certain folks should be "outlawed" is the definition of "about the people themselves".
Who would Jesus hate?
I'm sure I could scour the Bible and find reasons Speaker Mike Johnson should be "outlawed". Would he take that personally?
I'd rather lawmakers take their political believes from Aesop's Fables than The Bible.

(42,896 posts)There's a list of sins Paul describes in Romans, sodomy being among twenty he lists. That's Paul being out there with the Gentiles.
Jesus never said any of that or even hinted that. Jesus believed that Law had an important and honorable place on earth -- not pharasaic law, not Pauline sin lists, but Roman law.

(42,896 posts)Jesus never said anything about homosexuality. But Jesus DID say, and is quoted:
"Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man." John 8:15
"Judge not, that ye be not judged." Matthew 7:1, Luke 6:37, Paul's letter to the Romans 2:1, 14:3-4, 10, 13
