And in the ritzy neighborhoods it was indeed close to $8.

He's still an asshole but yes, Cali gas prices were crazy a few weeks ago... back down to around 5.50 now.

Pretty sure the common understanding in the US is if you say "price of gas," you're talking the price of a gallon of regular.

Even assuming that you could find a few stations charging $8/gal for premium that doesn't make "Gas in California is $8.15 a gallon" true. In any sense.

In fact I'd say half the cars in my community use Premium... and frankly the difference between 87 and 91 is rarely more than 20-30 cents.

Why buy a car that requires a higher more expensive octane gas?

The higher the compression ratio the bigger the bang and better performance.

The problem is higher compression causes heat and lower octane fuel can detonate prematurely before the piston reaches the top of the cylinder. When that happens there's an audible knock or ping and it can destroy an engine under hard acceleration. Manufacturers alter the ignition timing electronically in some turbocharged cars to prevent this, but your car may still require a higher octane fuel.

The smart thing to do is check your owners manual and use the grade they require. Don't think you'll save $3 on a fill up by using regular in a high compression engine. You'll lose in short order.

in California.

I'm sure there are places ( like in the heart of San Francisco ) where the price is higher. There isn't a lot of gas stations in San Francisco.

And the cause of this is directly related to the price of oil... which right now is being dictated by Trumps buddies Vlad and MBS. Gee, I can't imagine why.

Gas went under $3/GAL and a CC I use provides an additional 50 cents/GAL off, so it's like it's the 1990s again.

The current average price in California is 5.23 for regular unleaded. The most expensive regular gas in CA is $6.36, in Mono County on the Nevada border. Premium is $5.62 on average, so Trump is full of shit, once again!

Here in NC I've been finding gas for right around $3. In some neighboring counties it has dropped below $3.
