Elon Musk announced that he would allow humanitarian organizations in Gaza to use the satellite system - after Israel cut off communications to effectively fight the terrorist organization Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip
Billionaire Elon Musk announced on Saturday that he is willing to operate SpaceX's satellite internet system Starlink in the Gaza Strip area for the benefit of aid organizations. Starlink will support connectivity to internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza, Musk posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account. However, once Starlink is introduced into this area, it may not be possible to deny the terrorist organization Hamas access to the system. This introduction could potentially provide significant assistance to the terrorist organization in its conflict with Israel.
On Friday, in preparation for a major ground incursion into the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched an operation targeting internet and media infrastructure in the region. The primary objective of this action was to disrupt communication among Hamas operatives, hindering their ability to prepare, coordinate, and respond to Israeli military activities within the Gaza Strip. While this move raises concerns about potential harm to civilians, the military viewpoint justifies it as a strategic blockade aimed at safeguarding the lives of Israeli soldiers and enhancing the effectiveness of the upcoming ground offensive.

(2,267 posts)I'd guess they were getting some decent intel if not targeting information from them. Taking them down may have been a mistake or due to power outages at the cell phone towers themselves.
Ukraine killed a bunch of Russians that forgot to (or weren't aware/didn't know how to) delete location info from pictures they posted to social media.

Approximately two weeks ago, Communications Minister Karhi announced ongoing negotiations regarding the deployment of the system in Israel.
Musk's decision comes less than a month after a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during which he received a public endorsement. Netanyahu remarked: "I also know that you oppose anti-Semitism." This development has led to discussions about the implications of Musk's technology in a politically charged region.

(2,267 posts)It's not a single satellite in geostationary orbit. It's a network of thousands passing off signals as they transit overhead.

(31,577 posts)Sure, they share internet data between the satellites, but the one that is communicating with the ground receivers might have a problem.
Red Mountain
(2,267 posts)moving faster than the earth rotates. The signal up/down is constantly being passed off to a new satellite as they pass over. To disrupt the signal you would either have to interfere with it at ground level or destroy an awful lot of satellites in the inclination that passes over a particular spot.....which would be bad on many levels.
Here's what that looks like:

(17,802 posts)But they do run some. Not that they don't already have comms, but not every field unit may be in range.
The point is it will be going to military groups. Just like all aid, if you want any to get to civilians, you have to supply the military.

(34,015 posts)I have a question about starlink. Can Israel spy on satellite? Does it have IP addresses etc? Anyway, I think they restored it because Biden insisted on it. Security Council vote is tomorrow. We have the veto against UAE's resolution.
White House: Restoration of communications in Gaza was 'critical'
The White House said Sunday that the "restorations of communications in Gaza was critical."
"Aid workers, civilians and journalists need to be able to communicate to each other and the rest of the world. Our Administration cared about this, worked on it and are glad to see it restored," it added.
