Yikes!
From Climate reporter Emily Atkin--
So when I saw Kim Kardashians new commercial for the SKIMS Ultimate Nipple Bra which is essentially a bra with built-in hard nipplesmy first reaction was to laugh. It pokes fun at the climate crisis in both a dark and racy way.
Heres what the whole thing says:
See, its very funny! Except for one, super small, teeny-weeny thing:
Kim Kardashian, the person telling us this joke, is not doing it to ease the existential burden of living through the climate crisisa burden she, a billionaire, does not personally have to grapple with.
Kim Kardashian, billionaire, is telling us this climate joke to sell shit. Fossil-fuel derived shit. While she flies in a private jet that annually emits 610 times more than the average person emits in a year; while she operates multiple billion-dollar businesses dedicated to fueling unhinged consumerism of fossil fuel-derived plastic products; while she refuses to disclose the emissions of those businesses; and while she tells the rest of the world to be realistic about climate solutions.
Heres what the whole thing says:
The Earths temperature is getting hotter and hotter.
The sea levels are rising.
The ice sheets are shrinking.
And Im not a scientist,
but I do believe everyone can use their skillset to do their part.
Thats why Im introducing a brand new bra with a built-in nipple.
So no matter how hot it is, youll always look cold.
Some days are hard. But these nipples are harder.
And unlike the icebergs, these arent going anywhere.

Think. Again.
(8,435 posts)6. But...
...it's getting people to talk about climate change in a frame that allows it to not be taken seriously.

As with all things Kardashian it's all a façade. But, hey, it's her job to... influence.
"Fast Fashion" has become one of the biggest polluters on the planet. Landfills are full of fabrics and fabric waste.
So, how eco-friendly is the Ultimate Nipple Bra itself? It's made out of 84% Nylon and 16% Spandex. Neither material is biodegradable and they're both made from fossil fuels.
Nylon further releases microplastics and is a significant part of ocean waste. It can be recycled more than once, but, as the Guardian notes, "provided it has not been blended with other fibre types."
Nylon
Like polyester, nylon is also a plastic derived from fossil fuels but it is more expensive to make and therefore used less frequently. It makes up about 11% of the clothing fibre market. Since nylon is stretchier and stronger than polyester, it is often found in swimwear and yoga gear.
Spandex
This elasticity makes it similar to rubber. But while natural rubber or elastic is derived from trees, elastane is derived from polyurethane and will not biodegrade. While elastanes capacity for stretch and recovery makes it very useful in athletic gear and underwear, when exposed to heat or too much strain, its elasticity will degrade over time.

(10,807 posts)5. There are those who are happy to see this product
When Kim Kardashian's nipple bra dropped, some people laughed. Breast cancer patients rejoiced.
Skims isn't the first to experiment with faux nipples. Victoria's Secret released a nipple bra in the early 2000s. But while the new product builds on the trendy push to free the nipple and ditch bras altogether, it was met with ridicule online. Some people thought Kardashians promo video posted Monday was an "SNL" skit, while many others questioned the need for such a product.
The breast cancer community, however, dominated the comment section with praise, and in conversations with USA TODAY, emphasized that this bra could also serve as a gender-affirming product for trans and non-binary people.

There are other things to base knocks on Kardashian on. But, theres plenty of people out there who would like to feel fashionable instead of orthopedic or prothesetic.
If it takes a well known model pushing them that its okay to feel good about themselves, then so be it.
