Quite the dog whistle moment for MAGA nation:
Former President Trumps attorney Alina Habba went after New York Attorney General Letitia James on Monday, saying shes just not that bright.
James is leading the ongoing civil trial against Trump alleging that he and his adult sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, spent years committing business fraud by inflating and deflating the value of their companys assets.
Habba, in a Newsmax interview on Monday, said James doesnt have a good case. However, Judge Arthur Engoron already ruled that the fraud occurred, and the ongoing trial is set to determine damages.
Shes just not that bright. Im sorry, I have to say it, Habba said. Ive seen their case, Ive seen their lawyers. They dont know what theyre talking about.

Interesting choice to include the judge in that screed.
One could get the impression that Trump et al. have conceded the case and, as with the lost election, are turning to their fanatics.

(128,927 posts)until she joined TFG's Bedminster club and flaunted her cleavage in order to get herself hired by Himself, whereupon she managed to get herself fined almost a million bucks for filing a frivolous lawsuit on his behalf against Hillary Clinton. Referring to Letitia James as "not that bright" is, of course, not only projection but a racist dog-whistle. But James is the NY AG and she's not. We'll see who gets the last laugh, and I don't think it will be any of TFG's third-string lawyers, who will be lucky to keep their licenses when this is all over.

It's incredible the legal minds that Trump attracts.

I'm not saying he's a genius, but his public persona shouldn't be taken as a measure of his intelligence. It's an act.

(4,741 posts)He knows how to prey on people, but he's stupid about that even. Even mafiosi who didn't get past primary school knew how not to bankrupt a casino, after all. Those dudes were proof that people could be smart, despite their lack of education.
This prat is educated stupid. If he were as smart as he claimed, he'd release his own college transcripts before demanding it of others. Yet, somehow, he refuses to provide that kind of evidence about his claims to be smart.
I mean, we already know his marketing professor at Penn considered that box o'rocks the dumbest student he ever had. And we know the nitwit lied about graduating at the top of his class at Penn (the commencement programme doesn't even list him as any kind of noteworthy student). And his niece has alleged he had someone else take his uni entrance exams.
Those are not signs of a bright guy. Clever in the way of a reptile after prey, maybe, but not smart.
Big difference.

(13,209 posts)He most likely paid someone to take his college exams for him, and we all saw his lack of knowledge about the US when he didnt know that Puerto Rico is part of the US. I remember a few comments from world leaders that he had no grasp of world history or current issues. What Trump has is a savvy ability to manipulate people, including the media. How else to explain why so many lawyers agree to work for him when he doesnt pay them unless they get the money up front. And how else to explain his ability to convince his cult that he is their savior when all he does is lie.

(11,767 posts)He is however, ignorant and incurious. He thinks that he knows more than others which makes him not want to learn anything new.
He is failing now because while he may have changed the outward persona, he has not changed his strategies. He thought he could use the same tactics that he used to scam and cheat people in New York and New Jersey to go against the State and Federal Governments and he is finding out that there is a limit.
Because he is limited, he doesn't have any other options. If he was a gamer, he'd essentially be spamming the buttons to try to score a lucky hit right now.

(82,849 posts)For someone who's not too bright in Ms. Habba's estimation, she already won the case; this portion of the trial is about how much it's going to cost the defendant. Meanwhile, Ms. Habba, her co-counsel, and her client are all doing their level best to piss off the person who's going to decide the amount of damages. How bright is that?

(11,767 posts)Trump is not a religious person, despite his acting as such to fool the idiot evangelicals. His concern is what is in his mind at the present time. He wants to die thinking that he is a "legend" and "the greatest". I personally, from observing him, think that when he has not distractions, when he is alone and all is quiet, I think that he knows that he is not good enough, not smart enough, and basically a POS. His desire to deny that, to run from it, to stave off the humiliation of everyone else knowing it and seeing it, is what drives him.
He is running from humiliation. He is running from ignominy. If he gets to his grave unconvicted, with some money and assets intact, he may think that he "won". His legacy however, and possibly the lives of his children, will be significantly affected by his actions. I don't think he really cares about that though.

(4,741 posts)Ms James is smart enough not to rack up tens of thousands of dollars in sanctions for filing a lawsuit that was not only frivolous but also full of lies in pursuit of a political--not judicial--agenda.

(10,817 posts)put a $250 mil civil claim against the Teflon Don
AG James' claim was so solid, Alina Habba could not muster a response to contest AG James statement of claim. The judge ruled Trump et al. committed fraud. That is how good of a job AG James legal work was. She's arguably the first one in the legal profession to really nail Trump on something of substance (Trump university students got Trump for $25 mil). Letitia James kicked Alina Habba's butt.
Previously, Letitia James shuttered Trump's bogus charity and nailed him for $2 mil.
Now, the bickering in the court in this case is over figuring out how much Trump owes for this fraudulent behavior. $250 mil is probably on the low side according to a number of opinions.
I strong suspect, when the verdict comes down, Alina Habba is going to be the one not looking so bright.
