Sorry to say this, but the flippant bit about "the kids" does make you sound like a crabby old man and is kind of an insult to her older fans. I'm 74, and she is the best thing I've found musically since The Beatles. She appeals to all ages, not just "the kids".

When your "big break" involves daddy buying 3% of the record company signing you, the path is much smoother. Sounds like the old "born on third base and thinks she hit a triple" stuff.

At a showcase in Nashville's Bluebird Cafe in 2005, Swift caught the attention of Scott Borchetta, a record executive who was preparing to form an independent record label, Big Machine Records. She became one of Big Machine's first signings, with her father purchasing a three percent share of the company.

https://www.theswiftmuseum.com/life-and-career

And then, of course, let's ignore that her carbon footprint is 637 times yours or mine:

While Swift does not flaunt her jets, she is on the top of the celebrity list in terms of carbon emissions from traveling in private planes. On July 29, Yard, which tracks celebrities’ private plane use, noted: “Taylor Swift might be today's pop princess, but Yard's research found that Miss Swift is the biggest celebrity CO2e polluter of this year so far… Her total flight emissions for the year come in at 8,293.54 tonnes.” For reference, as per the World Bank, in 2020, the average global per capita carbon emission was 4.3 tons. This means Swift's private jet footprint alone was 1,928 times the global average. Or, more conservatively, it was 637 times the U.S. per capita carbon emissions of 13 tons.

"Did Taylor Swift’s Dad Buy Her Career?

The short answer is, no. But you wouldn’t believe that from listening to Taylor Swift detractors or reading the comment threads on Swift articles. Quick to discount the young songstress, this is the first accusation you will see of why Taylor Swift’s success is a sham."

https://www.savingcountrymusic.com/did-taylor-swifts-dad-buy-her-career/

From your own link, in fact, right before your cherry picked quote:

"In Nashville, Taylor started working with songwriter Liz Rose during two-hour writing sessions every Tuesday afternoon after school. Later, she became the youngest artist signed by Sony/ATV publishing house, but left the group at age 14."

Imagine that...her dad bought THREE percent of a fledgling company his 14 year old daughter was working with, after having been previously signed with Sony/ATV. The horror!

Her birthday is a week from today, and she will be 34 years old. And she's a billionaire. At 33! That is NOT the result of Daddy's three percent.

I don't know much of her music, but this comment diminishing an obviously talented, gorgeous, successful young woman who mobilized her millions of fans to vote is unnecessary, unkind, and untrue.

PS. Thanks for that link. I've learned a lot about Ms. Swift and her pics are lovely.

She is brilliant songwriter and musician. She is highly respected by other musicians, she is extremely generous with her money. Gave her crew from the US Tour, huge bonuses.
Her fathers share in a record label she had to fight to leave, did not give a career that is still going strong. Taylor Swift did that herself.

There are PLENTY of famous people who have kids or siblings who fail at also becoming successful. Singing is probably the hardest business to make it outside of athletics.
As for her "carbon footprint", I guess no one should be entertained by anyone or anything outside their hometown. Its about as ridiculous as all the private jets flown to "climate change" conferences across the world.
Swift isnt just an entertainer, she's an INDUSTRY. She provides jobs for a LOT of people year round and 1000s during a tour. She's literally an economic impact on every city she visits; nearly a 6 BILLION impact nationally.
She also gave out $55 MILLION to her entire crew after the US leg of her tour was completed.

To trump. MTG can spank him with it.
I really like Taylor. I own 7 Taylor Guitars. In Bob Taylor’s quarterly Magazine about the company, he highlighted a Taylor Story when she was a teen, unknown, proudly playing an 814 CE. The Mag always highlights up and coming singer songwriters. Her obvious choice of quality acoustic guitars.
I loved her since Then. I named my next to last female lab Taylor. (After the guitar though).
She is a great hero to young girls.
I watched the USWNS team play China last night. And as a dad of a daughter, watching the very young girls in the audience in awe of the players was so great.
Taylor and the National Soccer team are exactly what young girls need right now with the GQP attacking all women.
With the MTG’s the Boebert’s, Lake, Stephonic, Fox bimbos, thank God for real hero’s for young women to look up too.
I also like Taylor because she is so much in Kelci’s head, the Chiefs are struggling. 😆
He is too in love to focus on the field.

I've listened to country music for decades. It can be cringy at times, but generally is easy listening.

But I always especially liked Taylor swift. The messages in her songs were very progressive, but subtle. Very empowering, anti violence against women.

Glad to see she got recognition. Much better than giving it to some hateful billionaire just because they caused some kind of terror somewhere.

An amazing talent. Her storytelling is fantastic.
I have played for 60 years and for the life of me can NOT write a song.
Lyrics in a lot of music today are just trash.
Like Eminem, not my style, but the art of lyrics and story telling are unbelievable.
Taylor IS the ideal person of the year.
I am old enough to remember, Loui Loui by the Kingmen. To this day NOBODY knows a word of the verses. I was in a band then and we played it. Had to mumble verses with sounds not words.
So the newest version of them performing on a PBS fundraiser last week, still could not understand one word of a verse.
Keep the stories coming Taylor.
Keep touching the hearts of young girls. And boys, even older ones like Travis.

Interior lives matter

Maybe this is the real Taylor Swift effect: That she gives people, many of them women, particularly girls, who have been conditioned to accept dismissal, gaslighting, and mistreatment from a society that treats their emotions as inconsequential, permission to believe that their interior lives matter. That for your heart to break, whether it’s from being kicked off a tour or by the memory of a scarf still sitting in a drawer somewhere or because somebody else controls your life’s work, is a valid wound, and no, you’re not crazy for being upset about it, or for wanting your story to be told.

Swift has done nothing to influence world news or events. That is supposed to be the criteria. A desperate old media magazine.

They hope her face on their cover will sell magazines. Time used to be an institution in the media. They had subscribers all over and in schools it would be used for term paper assignments and other homework. Now almost no one reads it. Subscriptions down to a small percent of what they were. It is part of the old dying media always struggling to survive one more year.

I don't. How many young people? And where? And far more important will they vote? All unknowns. When they vote, if they do, and her supposed registered voters make a difference, if they do, then make her Person in 2024.

From your link: It's not clear exactly how many of the registrations were tied to Swift's Instagram.

35,000 registrations out of 272 million. About 1/100 of 1%. I know equally unscientific.

Time violated their own stated criteria for Person of the Year just so they could put Swift on the cover and try and save their dying magazine.

Proximity in time as some evidence of relationships, as I’m sure you know. Statisticians wouldn’t make the comparison you are making to draw the inference of some impact on registrations.

Please provide hard evidence that Time violated their own award criteria, which are based primarily on perceived impact of accomplishments. They cited some very impressive accomplishments in their story on this award, eg, record sales, success of tours, even economic impact on communities where concerts were held. They gave the award to Nixon and even to Hitler in the past.

According to Time, there is really only one criterion that determines the Person of the Year. They are “the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year.”

https://www.distractify.com/p/time-person-of-the-year-criteria#:~:text=According%20to%20Time%2C%20there%20is%20really%20only%20one,and%20embodied%20what%20was%20important%20about%20the%20year.%E2%80%9D

You may think Swift was the person who "most affected the news and our lives" but I doubt few others do. It was given to sell magazines and save them for a short time.

They didn't get the Stones, the Temptations, or any of "our" music. But I didn't care, I loved it all.

Now we're the parents and grandparents, and we don't get Taylor Swift and other young stars. It's OK, we don't have to get them. Their attraction is for the teens and young adults of today. Let's be thankful that she isn't a MAGA or a QAnon.

The good, the bad, and the dangerous others named TIME's Person of the Year:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Person_of_the_Year

Time magazine named Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy "Person of the Year" in 2022.
Past winners have also included Tesla (TSLA.O) CEO Elon Musk, climate activist Great Thunberg, former President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
