David McAfee
A conservative talk show host on Monday was hit with severe pushback after a social media post that appeared to hail the Statue of Liberty, gifted to the U.S. by France, as a supreme example of American architecture.
Jesse Kelly, who in 2021 openly speculated that Republicans may soon get tired of "following the rules" and "pick a fascist" to lead the party, posted on Christmas eve that American art and architecture is superior to that of Europe.
People love to sound sophisticated and brag about European art and architecture, he said Sunday. Ive seen Americas and Ive seen what theyve got. Theirs cant touch ours. Along with that caption, Kelly also included a photo of the Statute of Liberty.
Kellys post was hit with a community note from the social media platform, which states that readers added context to this image.
The copper statue, a gift from the people of France, was designed by French sculptor Bartholdi, its metal framework was built by Eiffel, the note states. The statue was dedicated in October 1886. The idea came from abolitionist de Laboulaye, to commemorate the centennial of U.S. independence.

Pleasure to help and inform you. Here's Isabelle Boyer, a French woman, the face of the statue de la Liberté (we offered you) and here's the statue in Paris's streets (rue de Chazelles but you must not know, as all the rest).

See how that works?
Oh, I get it. Your version of "freedom" stops at #1. Not that I didn't know that already.

Now, that's not a particularly impressive pile of stones by ancient standards... but nobody piles stones like that anymore! USA! USA! USA!

(7,718 posts)Collecting all those huge blocks of stone, carving each of them meticulously by hand and machine to fit together seamlessly into that big statue of the lady with the lamp, then dismantling her, labelling each stone, transporting to that island, and doing the reassembly.
A marvel of engineering, unsurpassed anywhere in the world!
I watched the whole transport and reassembly on TV back in the days.
The Foxx Nuyz commentator was almost in tears, it was a beautiful moment!

The statue was first assembled in France. Then, it was disassembled and brought over in hundreds of parts by ship. It was rebuilt at its final position.
Gustav Eiffel was involved in the project as well - he designed the interior frame of the statue.
Bob_in_VA
(135 posts)When it was reassembled, it was done wrong. Some of you will be old enough to remember when the statue underwent restoration in 1984-86. It was found during the restoration that part of supporting framework of (I believe) the upraised arm had been reassembled incorrectly and needed to be fixed.
Yeah, Jesse. We not only didn't design and build it, we put it back together incorrectly. So much for "superior" engineering of the US.
