(36,516 posts)They all got paid six figures. $110K was entry level pay in that department for a computer science major. Some guys were making over $200k. By spring most of them had paid all their SS taxes. One year they were in the break room chortling about the great increase in their paychecks due to no more SS taxes. There were $8 an hour employees in the room. I was the CEOs admin so I shamed them a little. "You guys are being insensitive jerks. You want to chortle about this, do it in the engineering conference room, not the employee break room."
Later the VP of Engineering came to my desk & said, "I heard what you said to my guys. I told them I wouldn't have been half that nice. Thank you."
He was the same guy who shared this joke with me:
Q: How do you tell an introverted engineer from an extroverted engineer?
A: The extroverted engineer looks at the toes of your shoes!
He was a good guy. Lost 30+ pounds & got in amazing shape after he left that job.

(10,724 posts)...back when it was set, $100k was a huge amount of money, practically no one made that much. It might have been not worth the fight to raise the cap, when there was very little up there to include. Now, as the rich have gotten richer, the dollar has declined (inflation), and the middle class has stayed about even for so long, all the growth in incomes has been above the cap for many years.
It only makes sense to raise it.
