Sad statement on our society today...

Working in the hospital I cannot tell you how many elderly patients are admitted days before a major holiday and don't see their family members again til a day or 2 AFTER the holiday. The federal facility I work at now...the most common admitting diagnosis: "loss of caregiver".
Amazingly, those "lost caregivers" suddenly "reappear" after a holiday weekend like this.
We started predicting the spike in this admitting diagnosis last weekend, knowing that Tgiving was coming up. Sure enough, the facility is pretty much full.
They get admitted with that diagnosis and then we "treat" whatever problems we may find along the way to make it look like we are actually doing something when, in fact, it probably could have been treated in the ER or as an outpatient and the patient could have gone home.

I worked last night and I go back in tonight....we had two empty beds when I left, I imagine they will be filled up by the time I go back.

2. Heartless.

I could possibly understand if the patient is a potential danger to others and/or is in the grips of dementia and thus unable to understand the holiday, but can think of no other reason to be such a snot.

I was the primary caregiver for both my parents over the last 5+ years. I have two sisters:

One who stole everything of any value from their home, even their writings, all the family photographs, my grandfather's large coin collection, rings, jewelry, even as my mother lay dying; and one who maybe came over once a week, if food was involved.

I've been enjoying the day alone.

4. Some caregivers deeply resent being stuck with their elderly parents

so they get rid of them any legal way that they can.
