Why has this been in my mind lately?

Hillary Clinton used that line in 1998 to counter the vicious and ongoing GOP attacks on her husband.

At the time, she was criticized for being at best a bit hyperbolic, at worst paranoid.

Of course now we see that it was a quaint understatement. We had no idea that the GOP conspiracy
was so vast, so far reaching and long term. That the GOP would actually align with American's enemies.
Would try to destroy democracy and target and destroy various American groups and institutions.
Would plan and execute an insurrection, a plan to overturn a presidential election.
Foist on the American people a man who is a criminal to be our president.
Who betrays our country at every turn.

The rot extends to the highest echelons of US government and cuts a broad swath throughout
the US bureaucracy. And of course we see the very well funded, organized GOP organizations, think tanks,
groups with the sole purpose of destroying our democracy and installing a white male christian minority rule.

Who would have thought in 1998 that Hillary's claim would be a serious understatement.

but the anti-democratic, white "Christian" minority has been tremendously buffeted by its gaining control of the MSM and now social media. The rise of Fox News and now with Putin pal Elon Musk in charged of X, and with the rise of AI and a deluge of misinformation and propaganda all over social media the Democratic party faces headwinds, democracy faces headwinds.

I think back to the Hillary/Bernie primary and the creation of Bernie Bros. Bernie Bros was created by Russians and designed to split the Democratic party. It makes me wonder about what's going on in Michigan, is there any foreign intervention there? The Israeli/ Palestinian war is a no win situation for President Biden and it is being exploited by Biden's enemies.

Hillary Clinton has been a modern-day Cassandra: truthful, prescient, not believed. It was all used against her in the 2016 election, her unwillingness to varnish the truth, make the ugly go down easy.

And here we are today, on the cusp of losing the country to a bunch of maniacs.

Which makes all the criticisms of Joe Biden, all the whinging about what he should or should not be doing (after he's done so much) absolutely ridiculous.and ultimately suicidal for the American experiment that we've all taken for granted.
