And the ignorant townsfolk still attacked him for it, complaining about government spending and blah blah blah.

Red-voting assholes are just that, and they'll happily fall to their deaths from a crumbling bridge before they'll praise a Democrat.

I realized that a basic difference between republicans and democrats is that the former have no belief in investing in their fellow humans. What is a nation but its people? They don’t believe in investing in that, bringing others along, using our collective resources to make life better for everyone.

What did they think? Just let the bridges fall and then what?

They would then praise the Republican for improving infrastructure, whereas they attack the Democrat for “buying votes” with their infrastructure plan.

And you’re right about investing in fellow humans. Conservatives explicitly mock the very idea of empathy, so anything that helps another person without directly benefiting the Conservative is an abomination.
