TOPEKA A Wichita man with severe developmental delays and mental health issues faces 21 months in jail after he threatened to kill President Joe Biden.
The U.S. Attorneys Office for the District of Kansas announced the sentencing of 28-year-old Cody McCormick on Wednesday. McCormick pleaded guilty to one count of making a threat against the president of the United States.
McCormick is accused of sending a Wichita television station a Facebook message outlining his plan to murder Biden on April 23, 2023. McCormick also sent a Facebook message to the Lane County Sheriffs Office that stated its my job to kill and finish him on the same day.
Court documents describe his threats as a cry for help. Also on April 23, McCormick tried to commit suicide by cop. His mother, Linn, called the police after Cody made suicidal threats, according to court files. Linn later told agents he had been off his medications for a month and hadnt been able to get refills.

(1,193 posts)Instead of jail. I feel it is an indication of his mental fitness rather than him being a criminal. Maybe they could have gotten him on some meds and talk him into sanity.

(49,927 posts)Sometimes the judge orders evaluation and treatment before the trial, and when the defendant is stable they sit for trial and serve their sentence.
Threatening a president of the US is very serious and it would be hard for the court
to just let this guy get mental health treatment instead of jail time.
I am a retired mental health professional and once a former client threatened the life of a sitting president. I had not seen this client for over a year.
The Secret Service came to see me, and they and the court made it quite clear to me that this was very serious and there was no wiggle room for this former client whatsoever.
I also learned among other things that HIPPA laws are not enforced when it comes to issues of national security.
I learned a bit more about the secret service than I wanted to.
But I do appreciate how hard they work to keep the president safe and they take zero chances when it comes to protecting him.

But we don't really know what the psych problems are.
Maybe they are not something treatable within a short period of time.

But as you said unpleaseant for you, still you got to see how they "do their job" in this kind of incident.

(49,927 posts)At first I would not give them any information about the client because I did not have a release. And did not think the client posed a real threat.
I was young and naive.
The secret service said fine, walked out of my office. They were very professional and polite.
In about 4 minutes the big boss of the clinic called me and said tell the SS everything you
know about this client and hand over the records or you are fired on the spot.

(49,927 posts)She was always polite and professional. Nice lady.
Was never heavy handed or unfair.
And I was an excellent employee with good yearly reviews and high productivity.
So to be threatened with immediate termination was a surprise.
I don't know what the SS said to her, but it got her attention.
And then she got my attention.
ETA: I was being foolish and misguided in my zeal for confidentiality.
This former client and made a direct threat to the president of the United States.
And that president was making a visit to our city in 48 hours from the time the
SS came to my office.
They were doing a sweep of the city getting ready for POTUS to visit.
Which is their job and they were doing it quite well.
