Harrison Butker's jersey sales rise as right wing lauds Chiefs kicker after rant

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/article/2024/may/17/harrison-butker-jersey-speech

Harrison Butker’s university commencement address at Benedictine College excoriating Pride month, working women, abortion rights activists and others has prompted the National Football League to disavow his remarks – but the Kansas City Chiefs placekicker’s jersey sales have spiked as conservatives seize on their latest culture war.

Butker has also drawn an impassioned statement of support from Josh Hawley, the far-right US senator from Missouri known for his opposition to abortion and a viral video which showed him running away from the mob he incited during the US Capitol attack on 6 January 2021.

“We need a different generation of kids that are willing to say no that’s not right, there is such a thing as right and wrong, I’m not going in for all of this lefty garbage and I just thought that his calls for folks to stand up and be bold was great,” Hawley said in reference to Butker during an interview on Wednesday with Spectrum News.

“He talks about not being too nice when you’re standing up for your convictions,” Hawley said to Spectrum News, a little more than three years after he threw up a clenched fist at – and then was caught on video running from – a mob of Donald Trump supporters who carried out the deadly Capitol attack after the former president’s 2020 election defeat to Joe Biden. “And I just think he’s right about that.”

We have a toxic sickness to defeat in November.

That particular kind of toxicity has to be destroyed...defeating it would only make it retreat until it comes back again!

Benedictine, a private liberal arts school about 60 miles north of Kansas City, invited Butker to be its commencement speaker nearly three years to the day after the college removed its chaplain from his position after he disclosed “inappropriate conduct” with a female student.

Meanwhile, a report on Friday from the Chicago Sun-Times documented how an Illinois-based monk belonging to the religious order which is associated with Benedictine pleaded guilty to a felony battery charge against a former student of the school where he taught – and has now landed on a list of organization members deemed to have been credibly accused of child sexual abuse.

. . .and let it be known on social media.

Even nuns think Harrison Butker’s commencement speech sucked
Butker’s commencement speech at Benedictine College was bigotry disguised as religion, and these nuns weren’t going to let that slide.

Not only do the Benedictine Sisters work outside the home serving the Lord, they’re a lot more progressive than Harrison Butker thinks Catholics should be. All the way back in 2013, the Sisters were calling for gun control reform to reduce the unfathomable gun violence in this country. They’ve spoken out against racism and misogyny, called for a ceasefire in Gaza, and even though (predictably) they oppose abortion, they at least acknowledge how terrifying the end of Roe is and believe they bear a responsibility for helping to financially and emotionally support people facing unwanted pregnancies. From their statement about the Dobbs ruling on their “Gospel Justice” page:

https://www.mountosb.org/statement-in-response-to-supreme-court-decision/
The Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica are especially cognizant of the fear and uncertainty this ruling will have on women who are or will become pregnant in the future. We are all called to give compassion, comfort, and financial assistance to those blessed with giving life, while others may avoid the need. We take it as our responsibility to help these women obtain proper healthcare, as well as food, shelter and other necessities, prior to childbirth and as they care for their family.

A final fillip from the author of this story refers to Travis Kelce/Taylor Swift:
I’m sure a lot of young women in that Benedictine College graduating class would have rather had Butker’s teammate’s girlfriend as their commencement speaker. The nuns might even agree.

Two of the best humans I've ever known were (former) nuns, quite progressive and very empathetic in their thinking and deeds. With all of the Catholic priest scandals and Supreme Court Catholic scoundrels it's good to keep the good-hearted ones in mind.

In Irish families the custom is for the two youngest children to be sent to the convent
or seminary at a young age.

At age ten my aunt was sent to the convent, a teaching order.

She was extremely smart, sophisticated, educated, progressive.
Superb social and relationship skills.

Humble too. We did not know until after her death all of her many accomplishments
and her high ranking jobs in the Catholic Church until we read her obituary written by
the diocese where she was working. We were astounded. We just knew her has Aunt Ann.

All of her nieces and nephews adored her. She always wore civilian clothes when she came
to visit, she didn't want to be off putting to the kids. She was just our aunt, no airs, no rules
with her. She was focused on us and how we were doing, always.

At every reunion we toast her, we still miss her.

Our last reunion was held outside and it was a terrible day with nonstop rain.
But just before we were all to meet, the day cleared up perfectly. And the biggest rainbow
you ever saw stretched across the sky.

My cousins are a smart, sophisticated group of people.
Doctors, engineers, cops, detectives, military, etc.

And every single one of us will swear under oath that Aunt Ann gave us the rainbow that day.

Her hard work as an intelligent, college-educated woman supported their family, is why he was able to play football in high school, go to college, and become a professional athlete.

What a douchebag.

And a lot of RW conservatives will be pissed they can't get dates because they're literally wearing their misogyny 🤣
