Why would his ex wife lie about that? Women in particular are going to resent the fact that he is calling the woman he cheated on (with a much younger woman) a liar. It may have gotten him a standing O with SC Republicans but most Americans will not be impressed.

(61,715 posts)I mean, think about everything we already know about Newt. Now imagine a set of people who would still support him. Are they going to let one more disgusting atrocious thing stop them?

(35,702 posts)Generally an open marriage is an agreement between both spouses that they can each have sex with other people. When one spouse is secretly screwing someone else, that is not an open marriage. It is also not clear that Newt was proposing an actual open marriage - just that he be allowed to continue to get his side nooky.

(35,702 posts)rings true, considering that Newt had carried on a 6 year clandestine affair. He had no intention of seeking a divorce until he got caught.

(35,702 posts)Particularly with women. You don't call the woman you cheated on for 6 years with a much younger woman a liar. You just don't. And Newt is already on thin ice with a lot of women. This just feeds right into their negative perceptions.

(20,450 posts)an affair.
Added to that, many women voted for John McCain who is married to Cindy, their marriage stemming from an adulterous affair.
The problem is this country's morals when it comes to Republicans. Republican moral transgressions are almost always forgiven and forgotten.

(35,702 posts)negative, though, particularly with a lot of women, who either were jilted themselves by a husband like Newt, or have a friend or relative who was.
And I could be wrong, but I believe Newt's affair with Marianne did not start until after he had started divorce proceedings with his first wife.

(11,304 posts)dating. He lied to her. Again why would she go on national tv and speak if it wasn't true. She isn't a pure person but I think he plays with these women and they fall for it. Personally I don't know why.

(30,058 posts)He backed up his with cheating on the first wife with cheating on the second one. Probably cheats on this one also. The present wants Newt to be president so she can be first lady but she is still third lady.

(35,702 posts)His wife discovered the affair and only then does he propose the open marriage bullcrap - probably to try and preserve his political viability. It rings true.

(1,948 posts)In spite of what Wolf Blitzer tells me, I highly doubt that Newt Gringrich's sex life counts as breaking news. If the issue is him cheating that's one thing (though still not really any of my business-though I do realize it makes Newt a tremendous hypocrite), though a lot of the outrage from what I could tell seemed to be at the idea of an open marriage. I've known some polyamorous people myself and I hardly see where anybody gets the right to judge them.

(35,702 posts)his ex wife a liar - which to my mind is more of a problem than the actual open marriage business. Anyway, it is kind of sleazy to ask your wife for permission to keep screwing someone else when she finds out about a 6-year clandestine affair, don't you think? I think it is relevant because it goes to the character issue. Note that this whole "affair" was concurrent with Newt helping to lead the charge to impeach Clinton for lying about Monica. I think the open marriage proposal was an attempt on Newt's part to keep his dalliance with Callista hidden. If he divorces his wife at that time it would have raised questions. Clinton was impeached in late 1998 and tried by the Senate in early 1999. Newt's divorce was finalized in 2000. Everything his wife is saying squares with the known time lines.

(37,748 posts)It may have something to do with candidate Newt being guilty of the very same transgressions he justified to remove Pres Clinton with.
