We'll be dealing with this Monsters family for decades to come. Along with the RETHUGLICON TRAITORS as well. What a curse they have put on our country!

(15,843 posts)Trumps defeat in November will hamper the anti-democracy movement on the right, and perhaps destroy it.
Loudmouths, including his family, will continue to spout their nonsense, but politicians who hope to win elections will abandon Trumpism, and fascism in general, unless they are content with shrinking the GOP to a regional, rather than national, party.

(17,360 posts)Not so much here. I think to many cultist RETHUGS in congress will keep his fire burning. His family will continue their bullshit!

(4,564 posts)Let's think about it...
His sons are Beavis and Butthead. Both are even dumber than their daddy and neither one has a smidgen of charisma. And Ivanka doesn't give a shit about any of it.
As for the rest of the MAGA contingent, no one currently on the scene really has the chops to win. If there was, the GOP would be running them.
We will still have to deal with a struggling and violent contingent of MAGA cultists for a while, but I think they will move on to something else to worship.

(48,401 posts)There is no one in Trump's family or circle who can replace him. There may be someone on the outside who could fill the spot, but I don't think there's anyone who can recreate the bizarre "magic" he did. Evidently, he was the right person at the right time and it is not likely to happen again for a long time.
Meanwhile, we'll have various factions of MAGA loonies and they will have different leaders. Being fragmented, it is unlikely that they will have the same political power that the Trump MAGATs had. I expect that the different factions will end up fighting with one another more than fighting the "establishment". They are small-minded people with limited vision and no real goals.

(23,617 posts)It will only lead it to step back, re-group, find a new leader, and come back for more. It will take a devastating, epic FDR-size landslide victory for Dems to push the cult over the cliff. They didn't go away with Goldwater's 1964 defeat; they faded into the shadows until Reagan was able to resurrect them. They have been out in the daylight ever since, and it will take a historic beat-down to send them back to the caves. I'm not sure even that will do it---oligarchy is a powerful drug.
Fiendish Thingy
(15,843 posts)If voters defeat MAGA candidates up and down the ballot, then the GOP will face the choice of continuing down the MAGA path, and only winning elections (and attracting donors) in the reddest regions of the country, and ceasing to be a force in national politics, or, rejecting Trumpism and fascism, and returning to the country club Republicanism of the past.
If the GOP keeps losing elections, they cannot survive as a party.

(150,270 posts)it will be a lot easier to deal with them. They will have lost the trappings and privileges of power. They will be (more or less) ordinary citizens.
May it be so!

(196 posts)Even if he loses, he will still stir up shit on lies antisocial and his followers will still eat it up. The GOP will still have to bow to him or the R voters will skin them alive in the primaries. As long as he is alive and free to spread his message, Trumpism will still be a toxic cancer on the world. We really need guilty verdicts to crimes that put him away for long enough for the cult to fade away.

Since trump, the mask has come off of so many people around me. I feel this country has a lot more problems than I realized since trump and they were like that before him they just hid it better.

They are emboldened. They don't believe in the same country we do. They will not stop.
They have no respect, honor, character (intangibles that used to be unspoken assumptions). They will supersede and violate existing law, precedent, custom, and tradition in the service of trump, punishment, racism, alienation, and theocracy.

(2,631 posts)I honestly think their backing of TSF is part of the plan. Watching him crash and burn and dumping his carcass in the swamp paves the way for someone the broader population can stomach more easily - someone like Youngkin or Abbot or Desantis.
These guys all support the same policies as TSF but don't have the baggage - and won't go off script. They'll do whatever it takes to stay in power and centralize power in their presidency.
If I'm completely going down the rabbit hole here - a Biden victory creates a vacuum for 2028. 12 years of a Democratic president seems like a stretch. Even with Harris, Newsom, and other big hitters in the wings, we'll have four more years of fuckery from the right and the media to overcome.
Anyway, thanks to the OP for waking up the pessimism today.

Who would ever vote for cokehead trump jr., or dumb ass gums trump. Princess Ivanka has completely distanced herself from trump, and the other daughter wiselu keeps a distance from the family too, probably from the advice of her mother.
The youngest son just graduated from high school and his mother took him out of politics by having him decline a delegate role in the upcoming rethug convention.
Not much future for that bunch in politics. Thank God.

(52,872 posts)The underlying disease is the sick state of our national discourse, brought down by decades of right-wing propaganda from hate radio to foxnews and now many smaller websites, podcasts, xitter feeds, and other channels. They didn't build this shitshow overnight.
Remember that Donnie isn't really anything special or unusual. He's just your typical foxnews addicted curmudgeon. Well. He ticks more privilege boxes than most people do, and he's got Russian support, but mostly he's just a typical foxnews addict.
So yeah. When he's out of the picture, someone we'll still have the same underlying forces and someone else will eventually step in as the next dictator wannabe. And odds are, the next one will be far more capable.

Donald Trump is the vehicle for the fascists to bring the country into their own alignment, something they could not/cannot produce through a democratic process. They're going for broke now, push a major system change whether the majority likes it or not.
Win or lose, this far-right virus will be with us for a substantial period of time.
First step is defeating them in November. But that's merely the beginning of the beginning, not the end.

(14,129 posts)Even after big setbacks authoritarians will always be waiting for an opportunity to seize power and make it very difficult to remove them. A bigoted, undereducated and apathetic public can easily be lured into electing them. Plus, the makeup of the Senate and the Electoral College gives them an edge even when they are a minority. They will always be well funded by oligarchs and treated generously by corporate controlled media.
All it takes is an economic, domestic, or international crisis, and no matter how competent our leadership, it is inevitable that there will be events for them to exploit.

(23,617 posts)...unless the other oligarchs share theirs for the cause. I think TFG's legal problems will ultimately bankrupt the family, and oligarch vultures will devour the remnants. The sons won't have the money, intelligence, or charisma to play in the bigs, and Ivanka just wants to be rich and pampered. It will be the other oligarchs that we have to fight, and regaining control of the courts and legislatures will be key to that fight. It'll be a tough slog, but the other option is to succumb to fascist oligarchy.

(3 posts)I have been heartened to learn that Trump's campaign is seeing a decline in small dollar donors, i.e. he's losing real support from his cult. Also, his crowd size was over-inflated by Wildwood NJ a few weeks ago, and his supporters haven't been showing up at the trial as he hoped.
I'd like to think his influence is finally waning, and hopefully "trump" goes back to being a pejorative. Will his grifter kids keep trying to milk it? Absolutely, because they won't have much to fall back on since everything else looks like it's being taken away, perhaps even his freedom.

I don't think the trouble will happen until the grandchildren come of age and there is no guarantee they'll have much use for Gramps. By then, much of the money will be gone to pay creditors and legal fees even if Gramps manages to stay out of prison.
The problem is the fan club. They'll be looking for another fake strong man to hang their hopes and dreams on. That's what we have to be ready for.
