Rishi Sunak is to announce a general election for July 4.
The prime minister is currently holding a cabinet meeting where ministers are due to approve the decision to go to the polls at the start of the summer. Whitehall sources said senior ministers had now confirmed a date in six weeks, with the prime minister expected to formally ask the King to dissolve parliament this afternoon.
