Senate Democrats Request Meeting With Justice Roberts Over Concerns About Justice Alito
Today, several Senate Democrats wrote to Chief Justice John Roberts, requesting a meeting with him concerning two recent New York Times reports about flags that were flying at Justice Alito's homes.
In recent weeks, the New York Times released two reports demonstrating that Justice Alito's house in Virginia had an upside-down American flag flying in 2021 shortly following the January 6th insurrection. The Justice later had an "Appeal to Heaven" flag flying outside of his New Jersey home. Both flags are symbols used by January 6th rioters to show their support for the Big Lie.
In the letter, Senate Democrats highlight the fact that "By displaying the upside-down and Appeal to Heaven flags outside his homes, Justice Alito actively engaged in political activity. A Supreme Court Justice should be impartial and should not be engaging in outward displays of political activity.
The letter is authored and signed by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, the Chairman on the Subcommittee on Federal Courts, Oversight, Agency Action, and Federal Rights along with Senator Richard Durbin, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, and calls for Justice Alito to recuse himself from certain proceedings related to Donald Trump and the Special Counsel's January 6th related prosecution.
